Joseph Garwood was elevated to lead the Piedmont Athletic Communications Department in 2025, continuing in his role as Director of Athletic Communications. He oversees all aspects of the department’s operations, providing coverage and media strategy for Piedmont’s 22 varsity sports while managing a full-time assistant and a team of student workers.
Garwood originally joined the Piedmont communications staff in the summer of 2018 and was promoted to Director of Athletic Communications in January 2024 after serving five years as Assistant Director. Over his time with the Lions, he has served as the primary media contact for a wide range of programs including men’s and women’s soccer, women’s basketball, softball, men’s golf, tennis and lacrosse.
During his tenure, Garwood has played a key role in expanding Piedmont’s digital presence and live broadcast offerings through the MANE Event Broadcasting Network. He has also implemented creative social media strategies, enhanced statistical coverage and curated feature storytelling that has garnered national visibility, including NCAA-wide promotion of his work through SIDEARM Narrator. He has also helped Piedmont showcase milestone events such as hosting the 2019 NCAA Demorest Softball Regional.
Before arriving in Demorest, Garwood built his communications career at the Division I level. He spent two years at Wake Forest University, serving as a primary media contact for volleyball, field hockey and women’s tennis, while assisting with football and women’s basketball coverage. He also contributed as Assistant Media Coordinator at the 2018 NCAA Tennis Championships. In between his stints at Wake Forest, he worked as a Media Relations Intern at Wofford College, where he served as the primary contact for multiple sports and gained extensive experience in media relations, game operations and student staff management.
Garwood is a 2015 graduate of Appalachian State University with a bachelor’s degree in history and a minor in political science.
