The 2016 season marks the 9th campaign for Stephen Andrew as the Head Women’s Soccer Coach at Piedmont College where the Falkirk native spent his own collegiate playing days for the men’s program as a four-time All-American for the Lions from 2000-03.  Andrew has been at Piedmont for all but one of the last 16 collegiate seasons playing his collegiate career for the Green and Gold before serving as an assistant for both programs three years following his graduation.

In his first eight seasons as the Head Women’s Soccer Coach at Piedmont, Andrew has posted a remarkable 121-35-7 overall mark earning his 100th career victory in the 2014 season.  Andrew’s career won-lost-tied percentage of .713 has him ranked 27th at the end of the 2015 season as one of the winningest coaches in the country amongst Division III by percentage.

Andrew has produced 44 All-Conference selections, six NSCAA All-South Region selections, and a quartet of NSCAA Scholar All-South Region honorees. In 2015, Andrew produced his first Conference Player of the Year with Cassidy Reich taking the honor along with Rookie of the Year honors becoming the first to do so in the 20-plus year history of the USA South in women’s soccer.

The coach’s teams have also been impressive in the classroom with 83 All-Academic honorees in his first eight years at the helm of the women’s soccer program.  Having developed the athletic department’s first Capital One Academic All-American (Justine Clay, 2011), Andrew has seen two more of his players earn the title with one in each of the past two seasons (Laura Goodwin in 2013, Kelsey Schaffernoth in 2014).

Clay and Goodwin also made waves on the field as Andrew has produced a conference Freshman of the Year twice during his Piedmont head coaching stint, once in his debut season in 2008 (Clay) and again in 2010 (Goodwin).  During his team’s time with the Great South Athletic Conference, Andrew recruited eight players that took home All-Freshman team honors from the league in their respective debuts.

2015 was a year for the record books as Piedmont went 20-2-1 under the direction of Andrew winning the USA South Tournament Championship for the second time in four years as a member.  It was the first 20-win season for the Lady Lions, but also the first such season for any women’s soccer team in USA South history with PC setting the new league mark for wins in a season.

The tourney title in ’15 handed Andrew his third NCAA National Tournament appearance as a coach with all of those coming in the previous five seasons.  Seven players earned All-Conference honors including Conference Player and Rookie of the Year Cassidy Reich whose double-overtime heroics against Methodist in the title game also gave her Tournament MVP honors.

The 2014 squad gave Andrew his first regular season title as a Head Coach going 14-4-2 overall and 10-1-1 in conference play alone for the share of the USA South Regular Season crown.  The Lady Lions posted a seven game unbeaten streak to earn the share of the regular season top spot before being eliminated in the USA South quarterfinals in PK’s.

As just a second year member of the USA South, Andrew’s Lady Lions wasted little time getting familiar with the high level of competition in the league winning the USA South’s Championship Tournament with a 2-1 win over Meredith in the final.  By virtue of claiming the 2013 title, Andrew’s squad also earned the league’s automatic berth into the NCAA National Tournament, Piedmont’s second such NCAA appearance in three seasons under the Lady Lion leader.

Andrew’s 2013 team posted a 17-3-2 overall record with a 9-1-2 mark in league play finishing just two points shy of claiming at least a share of a conference regular season title, a feat that his team would accomplish a year later.  After a 2-1 season-opening loss to Berry, the Lady Lions would post a 12-match unbeaten streak that stretched more than a month of the season and saw PC outscore their opposition 36-5 shutting out their opponents seven times.

In 2012, Coach Andrew led his team into a new conference starting play in the USA South Athletic Conference though the results were similar to his stint in the Great South Athletic Conference as his Lady Lions produced yet another 13 win season, the fifth such season in Andrew’s first five years at the helm.  Finishing with a 13-6-1 overall mark, a quartet of Lady Lions were named All-Conference selections by the league as PC also made a championship tournament appearance during its debut USA South season as well falling in the quarterfinals at Meredith College.

Perhaps more impressive than any of his team’s on-the-field accomplishments was the success of the Lady Lion soccer team in the classroom as 20 of the 23 rostered players in 2012 were named to the USA South Academic All-Conference Team for carrying above a 3.0 GPA in both semesters of the academic year.  PC’s academic commitment is nothing new for women’s soccer as the program has earned the NSCAA Team Academic Award in each of Andrew’s seasons as the head coach.

"What they're saying about Coach Andrew..."
“In my opinion, 'Petey' (Stephen Andrew) is one of the brightest young coaches in the Southeast. His teams are always well prepared and I knew our team would be in for a battle when we played his teams. Some of my fondest memories while I was at Agnes Scott were our battles against Piedmont. His wealth of knowledge of the game as a player has translated into coaching and his players are the recipients of that knowledge.”
    -Joe Bergin, Marietta College
    Head Men's Soccer Coach
    Former Agnes Scott Head Coach

In 2011, Andrew led his Lady Lions to perhaps one of the program’s most successful season in the more than 20-year history of women’s soccer at Piedmont to that point establishing a 17-3-1 overall record that included a GSAC tournament championship and the program’s first-ever appearance in the NCAA National Tournament.

Becoming the only Piedmont head coach to lead his team to an NCAA tourney appearance both as a player and as a coach, Andrew helped six Lady Lions earn All-Conference accolades and three All-Freshman honors.  However, the most impressive individual honor came when senior Justine Clay was named Piedmont’s first-ever Capital One Academic All-American for her efforts during the final season she spent playing for Coach Andrew.

Andrew’s 2010 campaign marked consecutive appearances in the Great South Athletic Conference championship tournament final by the Lady Lions for the first time since the 2004 and 2005 seasons while the team also boasted its second NSCAA All-South Atlantic Region selection in the previous two years.  Piedmont led the way in All-Conference honorees with six in 2010 while also claiming the GSAC Freshman of the Year spot for the second time in three seasons under Andrew.

The coach’s 2009 squad represented the most successful team in six years’ time as the Lady Lions recorded a 14-4 overall mark good enough for a .778 winning percentage. For his efforts during the 2009 season, Andrew was also named the GSAC Coach of the Year becoming the first recipient of the honor from the Piedmont women’s soccer program in PC’s NCAA era.

Before beginning his coaching career, Andrew was a four-year starter for the PC men's soccer program from 2000-2003 under then head coach Jason Smith. The Falkirk native still holds the school’s all-time career record for goals at 114 as he is one of just three players in the history of NCAA Division III to tally more than 100 goals in a collegiate career.

The four-time All-Conference selection led his team to the Great South Athletic Conference title in three of his four seasons wearing the Piedmont green and gold. Andrew was also named the Conference Player of the Year an unprecedented four times earning the honor in each of his four seasons as a Lion.

In addition to his conference accolades, Andrew placed on the NCCAA All-Region team and All-American team while being named the NCCAA South Region Player of the Year four times. Andrew also earned a pair of All-Region and All-American honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America in his time as a player with the Lions.

In 2003 during his senior season with Piedmont, Andrew notched a school record and national best 33 goals to lead the Lions to the college’s first-ever NCAA Division-III postseason in the first year of eligibility with the collegiate governing body.  Andrew’s team also continued to make history for the college notching the school’s first-ever NCAA postseason victories in any sport grabbing a pair of wins over a pair of nationally ranked opponents in Greensboro College and Emory University to advance to the Sweet 16 round before falling to the eventual national champion in Trinity University (TX).

Before coming to the states, Andrew competed at the highest level in his home country earning a trio of caps for the U-17 Scottish National Team making all three of his appearances during the spring of 1999.  On a 21-day European tour with the squad, Andrew saw action against the U-17 counterparts from Germany, Belgium, and Holland scoring a pair of goals along the way to earn national recognition at a young age.

After completing his undergraduate degree at PC, Andrew remained to serve as the assistant coach of both the women's and men's soccer programs at Piedmont for three seasons. During his tenure as the assistant coach, the Lady Lions posted an overall record of 31-26-4 and three straight runner-up finishes in the Great South Athletic Conference while the men’s teams grabbed a pair of conference championships winning a title in 2004 and again in 2006.

Following the completion of his third season as an assistant at Piedmont, Andrew took the reins of fellow GSAC member Huntingdon College for the 2007 season. Inheriting a Lady Hawks team that had posted a single win in 2006, Andrew led Huntingdon to a quarterfinal appearance in GSAC post-season play while mentoring a pair of conference All-Academic players before moving back to PC in 2008 to take over the women’s soccer program.

Andrew graduated from Piedmont in the spring of 2004 with a degree in Sports Marketing. The PC grad then returned to his alma mater shortly after to earn his Masters of Business Administration in 2006.

A result of his dedication to the Piedmont athletic department over the last 15-plus years, Andrew was inducted into the Piedmont College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012 as a part of the 23rd induction class of the prestigious club.  Andrew is one of three men’s soccer inductees to the Hall, a group which also includes Andrew’s coaching colleague in Jimmy Stephens, Piedmont’s Head Men’s Soccer Coach.

Andrew is an active member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and holds a National ‘D’ License from the United States Soccer Federation.   He has also served on several of the south’s top camp staffs including summers at the Maryville College Soccer Camp, Grass Rootes Soccer Camp, Cajun Soccer Club Preseason Camp, Red Bulls Super Camp, Wingate University College Showcase, and the Atlanta Silverbacks.

The Falkirk, Scotland native married the former Stephanie Hamner in April of 2011, and the two now call Auburn, GA home.
