DEMOREST, Ga. - Piedmont softball hosted Berry on a warm Wednesday afternoon in Demorest in the team's final non-conference doubleheader of the season.
The Lions fell by an 11-3 margin in five innings in game one before the Vikings stormed back to win game two with a five-run seventh inning.
Game 1: Berry 11, Piedmont 3 (F/5)
Offense was the story in the first game of the day, as the teams combined for 22 hits over just five innings. Unfortunately, the Vikings capitalized more consistently on their scoring chances, striking for 10 runs across the first three frames.
Piedmont was able to make solid contact on a regular basis, recording 10 hits. However, the Lions stranded nine baserunners over their five at bats, scoring three times.
Outfielders
Mandi Peretti and
Madison Hawkins provided solid offensive output for the Lions, with each delivering a pair of hits. Senior
Rylie Erickson drove in a run after entering as a pinch hitter earlier in the game.
Game 2: Berry 6, Piedmont 4
Game two was a different story, as the Lions jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the opening frame after a two RBI double from
Ellie Lenz brought home Peretti and
Anslee Saunchegraw.
Although Berry plated a run in the third inning, the Lions manufactured a run in the third to lead 3-1 as junior right-hander
Taylor Spivey was cruising in the circle.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Lions perfectly executed a first-and-third rundown, allowing Erickson to swipe home and extend the lead to 4-1.
The Vikings were undeterred, however, with four consecutive two out hits to flip the script and take a 6-4 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.
Piedmont responded by loading the bases, but Berry escaped the jam and closed out the sweep.
Up next, the Lions will host CCS foe Covenant this Saturday, April 18 at 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. with Senior Day festivities set to occur between contests.
