Softball Earns Split in Day Two of Diamond Classic

NEED TO KNOW:
Game 1 Score: Lynchburg 8,Piedmont 0
Game 2 Score: Piedmont 6, Methodist 0

RALEIGH, N.C. - Piedmont softball saw its winning streak end in game one of the afternoon, but earned the win in the second game of the day.

The Lions battled Lynchburg in a tight contest until the final innings while taking control early in game two to secure the win.

Game 1: Lynchburg 8, Piedmont 0

The game was a pitcher's duel throughout, with Jacy Vickery continuing a strong start to the season for the Lions.

Vickery navigated through the Lynchburg lineup before allowing a run to come home in the fourth. In the sixth, Vickery ran into trouble. The Hornets put two runners on and landed the big hit of the contest, hitting a three-run home run, giving them a 4-0 lead. Maile Dunn came on to pitch for Vickery, who departed, allowing four runs over 5.1 innings of work.

Things spiraled for the Lions in the seventh as the Hornets put four more runs on the board, putting the game out of reach.

The bats for the Lions struggled to put anything together as they fell in the first game of the day.

Game 2: Piedmont 6, Methodist 0

After a loss in game one, the Lions rebounded quickly in game two as they got the scoring started early with a rally in the second that led to Anslee Sauchegraw hitting another home run, adding to her total after her two homers on the previous day. The three runs gave Piedmont the boost it needed and carried a 3-0 lead at the end of the inning.

Taylor Spivey started for the Lions and had her best start of the year, shutting down the Methodist lineup and building on her strong outing in the previous game.

The Lions added on throughout the contest with runs in the third, fifth, and sixth, building their lead against Methodist.

Spivey was the star of the day, holding the Monarch offense back as she went the distance, twirling a complete game.

Spivey not only went the full seven innings but also struck out four while scattering five hits across her day.

Up next, Piedmont continues the Diamond Classic with two games tomorrow, March 8, at 9:30 a.m. against Eastern Mennonite University.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Anslee Sauchegraw hit the game-deciding home run for the Lions, continuing a strong start to her rookie campaign.
- Taylor Spivey twirled a brilliant game, keeping the Monarchs out of the run column while striking out four.
