DEMOREST, Ga. - The Piedmont University softball team forced visiting Huntingdon College to earn their two wins at Walker Athletic Complex Friday with the Hawks taking a 2-1 decision in game one before rallying for a 6-5 victory in game two.
Game 1: Piedmont 1, Huntingdon 2
The opener was a pitching showcase as Piedmont's Jacy Vickery faced off with Huntingdon's All-Region pitcher Allie Roberts in the circle. Both went seven complete surrendering just 3 total runs on 12 combined hits in the low scoring affair.
Huntingdon scored twice in the 4th with a pair of RBI singles from Kinley Hutto and Payton Gilchrist earning the visitors a 2-0 lead.
Piedmont cut the Huntingdon lead in half with an Anslee Saunchegraw RBI double that scored teammate Mandi Peretti.
But Huntingdon's Roberts locked in over the final two innings after allowing the Saunchegraw base hit in the 5th retiring the side in order in both the 6th and 7th innings.
Game 2: Piedmont 5, Huntingdon 6
The Lions followed up their game one showing with an offensive explosion in game two though all five of Piedmont's runs came in an eventful 3rd inning.
Huntingdon actually opened the scoring in the second game with a run in the 3rd, but Piedmont answered quickly tying the game in the home half of the inning on a Valerie Bailey RBI single that plated Maddi Spieks.
After evening the score, Piedmont's Ellie Lenz stepped into the box to blast a 2 RBI single giving the home team its first lead of the day making 3-1 good guys.
Bailey then scored along with Addy Perkins on a two separate at-bats to give Piedmont a 5-1 advantage and seemingly an unsurmountable lead.
However, the top ten opponent began to chip away at the four-run deficit over the next three innings picking up three runs in the visiting half of the 4th before tying the game on a sac fly in the 5th to make it 5-5.
Huntingdon then took the lead on another sac fly in the 6th as Gilchrist knocked home Hutto to put the Hawks back in front, 6-5, heading to the bottom of the 6th.
Piedmont did load the bases with one out, but the Hawks made a great play to get the force at home before picking up the third out on a grounder to 3rd, holding on for the one-run victory over the homestanding Lions.
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Maddi Spieks was 2-for-3 in game one before following that up with a 2-for-4 showing in the encore scoring one of Piedmont's 5 runs.
- Ellie Lenz had a 2-RBI single in game two which made her the only Lion with multiple RBI's on the day.
- Anslee Saunchegraw continues her successful 2026 season going 1-for-2 in game one with Piedmont's only RBI before tacking on a pair of walks in game two.
