MARYVILLE, Tenn. - In a hard fought road battle, Piedmont women's soccer fell just short in a 2-1 loss at Maryville Sunday evening.
The Scots struck first but
Paige Kluba's first goal of the season gave the Lions a quick equalizer. Unfortunately, Maryville struck early in the second half and held on the rest of the way to close out the win in the conference opener for both teams.
Even in defeat, it was a stellar effort in goal from Piedmont senior
Maggie Leger, who made a season-high seven saves.
Although the Scots held a 26-9 edge in total shots, Piedmont put 5-of-9 on target while the Scots were able to put just 9-of-26 on target.
Standout Maryville forward Hannah Smoot opened the scoring in the 27th minute, finding her way past the Piedmont back line and delivering a deft left foot shot to the far post to make it 1-0 Scots.
However, the Lions were undeterred. Just minutes later, a failed clearance for Maryville off a fantastic defensive play led to
Peyton Gates finding Kluba on a run through the Maryville back line and Kluba put away the low cross to equalize in the 31st minute.
The game continued knotted at 1-all until the Scots' Ellie Schuld netted the game winner in the 66th minute and Maryville held tough defensively from there.
Up next, Piedmont will look to get back on the winning track with another road contest, taking on Warren Wilson on the road this Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 4 p.m.
