GREENSBORO, N.C. - Piedmont women's tennis stepped out of conference but the result was the same as it delivered a 7-0 sweep at Guilford on Saturday afternoon in Greensboro, North Carolina.
The Lions left no doubt from the beginning, dominating in doubles to take the opening point before cruising in all six singles matches, winning all six in straight sets to complete the shutout.
Bri Laidman picked up a singles and a doubles win on the day, pushing her over 100 for her Piedmont career.
It was senior
Alyssa McSpadden and freshman
Sarah Sanabia who delivered the first match win, rolling 6-1 at No. 3 doubles to move to 5-0 on the season as a duo. Then, it was Laidman's turn, pairing with freshman
Caroline Morrison to win 6-1 at No. 2 and clinch the doubles point. The win marked No. 100 combined for Laidman in her career.
Finally, the No. 1 team of
Sarah Row and
Jordan Ballard added a 6-3 win for good measure, keeping momentum on Piedmont's side heading into singles.
Singles action saw four Lions take the courts first, with all four rolling in straight sets.
Morrison (6-0, 6-1 at No. 3) and Ballard (6-0, 6-1 at No. 4) posted identical score lines to push the Lions to within a point of clinching the match.
The senior McSpadden won the race to the clinch, also dropping just a single game in a 6-1, 6-0 victory at the top singles pot.
Closing out the sweep,
Olivia Carpenter (6-0, 6-2 at No. 5),
Hollan Rabensdorf (6-1, 6-3 at No. 6) and Laidman (6-3, 6-2) all picked up two-set wins to end the match strong.
Up next, the Lions will conclude the regular season with split squad action on Sunday. One group will stay in North Carolina and battle Salem in a non-conference road match while another group will take on LaGrange on the road in the CCS regular season finale.
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Laidman's two wins on the day push her over the 100 career mark combined between singles and doubles.
- Four of the 12 singles sets played over the six matches involved Piedmont not dropping a single game.
