DEMOREST, Ga. - Piedmont women's tennis kept its perfect season alive on Friday evening, rolling past Huntingdon 7-0 on a chilly evening in Demorest.
The Lions extended their overall match winning streak to 15, dating back to last season.
Piedmont left no doubt in doubles, losing just one total game in the first two matches to go final to give it a 1-0 advantage. Even counting No. 1 doubles, the Lions lost just three total games across the three lines.
Bri Laidman and Caroine Morrison clinched first (6-1) at No. 2, winning six straight games after dropping the first one. Moments later, a big service game from
Dannie Evans closed out her and
Alyssa McSpadden's 6-0 win at No. 3, clinching the opening point of the match for Piedmont.
Then for good measure, the No. 1 doubles team of
Sarah Row and
Jordan Ballard established control and pulled away for a 6-2 victory.
With the men's match going on at the same time, No. 1 through No. 3 singles took the courts first and by the time they left, the match was decided in Piedmont's favor.
It was the freshman Morrison who clinched first, rolling to a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 3. Then, it was a simultaneous clinch from McSpadden and Laidman, with McSpadden finishing first (6-4, 6-2) by a split second.
Laidman delivered a 6-3 ,6-2 win in her own right, moving to a perfect 4-0 at No. 2 singles this spring.
With the match in hand, Ballard (6-1, 6-2),
Olivia Carpenter (6-0, 6-0) and Evans (6-0, 6-2) took care of business at No. 4, No. 6 and No. 5, respectively to preserve the shutout.
Up next, the Lions will depart for Orlando, Florida for their spring break trip in which they will play six matches from Sunday through Thursday.
TURNING POINT:
- After losing their opening game, Morrison and Laidman quickly turned the tide at No. 2 doubles, clinching first at 6-1 just before Evans and McSpadden won 6-0 at No. 3 to get the Lions off and running.
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Moving up in the lineup has not affected McSpadden or Laidman, as they were part of doubles wins and simultaneously clinched the match at No. 1 and No. 2 singles.
