Softball Extends Win Streak to 12 with Doubleheader Sweep at Covenant

NEED TO KNOW:
Game 1 Score: Piedmont 10, Covenant 2 (F/6)
Game 2 Score: Piedmont 11, Covenant 2
Records: Piedmont, 19-9 (8-0 CCS); Covenant, 9-19 (0-6 CCS)

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - Piedmont softball ran its win streak to 12 games in a doubleheader sweep at Covenant on Saturday afternoon on Lookout Mountain.

The Lions used a complete performance to garner a run-rule victory in game one before exploding for a 10-run fourth inning for a five-inning run-rule win in game two.

Game 1: Piedmont 10, Covenant 1 (F/6)

Piedmont wasted no time jumping on the Scots in game one, scoring three runs in the opening frame and never going more than one inning without putting a run on the board.

The middle of the order was extremely productive, with the 2-4 hitters of Jasmine Lowery, Maddi Spieks and Hannah Cintron all recording three hits.

Lowery paced the team with four RBI while Cintron added two and Spieks led with three runs scored.

Megan Steinmeyer singled home the game's first run in the bottom of the first before Madi Cronic's two RBI single made it 3-0 after the first.

The second was scoreless, but Lowery singled, stole second and then scored on an RBI single by Cintron to add a run in the third.

With Steinmeyer in complete control in the circle, the Lions were in control, but the game was truly broken open with two runs in the fifth inning followed by four more in the sixth inning to make it a nine-run Piedmont lead.

Although the Scots were able to scratch across a run in each of the fifth and sixth innings, it was not enough to avoid the eight-run rule defeat.

Game 2: Piedmont 11, Covenant 0

It was a slower start on the offensive side for the Lions in game two, but the bats woke up with a bang in the fourth inning, with 10 runs in the frame to break the game open.

Mandi Peretti broke out in a big way, going 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored, including a three-run inside-the-park home run.

Lowery and Spieks also added another multi-hit game to their tallies, while Cronic and Steinmeyer also recorded a pair of hits in the offensive onslaught.

Peretti got things going in the top of the first, leading off with a single and then stealing second base before coming around to score on a two-out RBI single by Steinmeyer.

While the Piedmont offense was dormant in the middle innings, starting pitcher Taylor Spivey was excellent in the circle, holding Covenant off the scoreboard as the Lions held the 1-0 lead.

Then, in the fourth, the Piedmont offense exploded for 10 runs on 10 hits and also took advantage of three Covenant errors to put themselves in position for another run-rule win.

Cronic got the scoring started on an RBI single before Peretti circled the bases for her second inside-the-park homer in the last week, making it 5-0 Lions.

With the bases emptied following Peretti's homer, Spieks restarted the rally with a triple of her own and was immediately brought in on an RBI single from Lowery. Piedmont then continued to pour it on, highlighted by a two RBI double from Bailey Davis and then Peretti's RBI single capped the scoring, giving her two hits and four RBI total in just the fourth inning alone.

With an 11-0 lead, Summer McCranie fired a final scoreless inning to close out the game.

Up next, the Lions will travel to No. 19 Berry to take on the Vikings in doubleheader action scheduled for this Wednesday, April 2 at 1 and 3 p.m.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Lowery and Spieks each went 5-for-7 on the day as Lowery paced the team with five RBI total over the two games.
- Peretti went 4-for-8 and drove in all four of her runs in the second game.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- After Piedmont made three errors in the field in game one, it made just one in game two.
