ORLANDO, Fla. - Piedmont women's tennis completed a marathon Tuesday in Orlando, playing three matches beginning at 8 a.m. and concluding after 10 p.m.
The Lions were able to bookend the day with victories and head into Tuesday 11-1 on the 2024-25 season.
Match 1: Piedmont 6, Cornell College 1
Piedmont began the morning in strong fashion, racing out to a 1-0 lead by taking the doubles point with dominant wins at No. 1 and No. 3
Bri Laidman and
Brooklyn Bolch clinched first at the top spot, winning 6-1, shortly before
Abby Gayle Moody and
Caroline Morrison did the same at No. 3 to make it 1-0 Lions.
Although the Rams were able to win at No. 2 doubles, under the new rules format, Piedmont had already clinched the doubles point.
Singles action saw the Lions win 5-of-6 matches in straight sets to quickly take the win.
Alyssa McSpadden bounced back from a rare loss to roar to a 6-1, 6-1 triumph at the top spot in the lineup to make it 2-0 Piedmont.
Then, after Cornell was able to grab a point with a win at No. 2, the Lions quickly shut the door, with straight set victories at No. 6 and No. 5 to clinch the match.
Mackenzie Long won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 6 for her first dual singles win as a Lion, before sophomore
Drea Robinson provided the clinch, with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 5.
Closing out the first match in a very long day,
Jordan Ballard (6-2, 7-6 (4)) and
Sarah Sanabia (7-6 (1), 6-3) both had to battle and win tiebreaks to clinch in straight sets and give Piedmont the 6-1 victory.
Match 2: St. Catherine 4, Piedmont 3
Having to spread out the lineup across three matches in one day, the Lions were unable to find enough to remain unbeaten, falling to St. Catherine's 4-3 in the middle match of the day.
St. Kate's ran away quickly at No. 1 (6-0) and No. 3 (6-1) doubles to take the doubles point, although McSpadden and Sanabia salvaged some momentum for the Lions with a non-counting 6-3 win at No. 2.
The Wildcats were quickly ahead 2-0 in the match with a clinical 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1. However, Piedmont was able to battle back, thanks to
Caroline Morrison's dominant 6-1, 6-0 win of her own at No. 2.
St. Kate's responded with a win at No. 5 but Piedmont did not go quietly, as
Dannie Evans won a hard-fought match at No. 4, going the distance for a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 victory while Bolch also won in the decisive third set, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
Unfortunately, SCU was able to take the match with the deciding win at No. 6.
Match 3: Piedmont 5, Millsaps 2
In the finale of the marathon Tuesday, the Lions capped the evening with another outstanding performance against the Majors.
The team of Evans and McSpadden continued their dominance from the No. 3 doubles spot, rolling 6-0 before Ballard and
Sarah Row delivered a 6-3 victory to clinch the doubles point for Piedmont.
Bolch and Laidman battled at No. 1 but fell 7-5 in a match that did not count toward the team score.
Singles action saw the freshman Morrison pick up her second dominant win in a row, this time cruising 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4 to make it 2-0 Lions.
Ballard then continued her strong play, battling through a tough match at No. 5 to triumph 6-3, 6-4 and put Piedmont a point away from clinching. That clinch came from Laidman moments after Ballard's win as the senior won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2.
McSpadden kept the Piedmont run going with a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 1. With the match in hand, the Lions did allow Millsaps to win a pair of long battles, at No. 6 and No. 3 to close out the evening.
After a day off from competition on Wednesday, the Lions will conclude their Orlando trip against Loras College on Thursday, March 13 at 3:30 p.m.
