Game 2 Score: Piedmont 3, Mt. St. Joseph 9
Records: Piedmont, 1-1; Mt. St. Joseph, 1-1

DEMOREST, Ga. - In a battle of Lions at Walker Athletic Complex Friday afternoon, it was the Piedmont Lions who took game one of a DH with the Mount Saint Joseph Lions by a tight 3-2 decision before the visitors went on to win game two 9-3 forcing a split in the opening DH of the 2025 softball season for both teams.

GAME 1 - Piedmont 3, Mt. St. Joseph 2

Piedmont scored three runs in the opening frame of game one to take control early highlighted by a 2-RBI Madi Cronic double to right center plating teammates Heartly Nepveux and Jordyn Green.  Mt. St. Joe's would be held scoreless until the 5th inning when the Lions picked up a 2-RBI double of their own as Alayna Flynn drove in a pair cutting the lead to just one run.

Working in the circle for the final two innings, Piedmont's Summer McCranie put the cap on any possible MSJ rally striking out the first batter she faced in the 6th and retiring the side in order in the 7th to earn the save in relief with Megan Steinmeyer notching the win for the Lions.  McCranie threw two shutout innings and did not give up a hit to the visitors to earn the save while Steinmeyer threw five with two runs and four hits given up.

McCranie's performance came on the heels of Steinmeyer stiffling the MSJ offense in the top of the 5th after the visitors had plated a pair to make it a one-run ballgame.

It was then that the senior from Appling, Ga. settled down and retired the next two batters she faced forcing a pop out to short before a hard hit ball off the batter's barrel laced safely into the well-placed glove of Piedmont 3rd baseman Kaylee Taylor to end the inning and the threat.

GAME 2 - Piedmont 3, Mt. St. Joseph 9

In the encore, it looked to be headed towards a sweep for Piedmont as the home team held a 3-2 edge in the 2nd inning care of a Maddi Spieks double that scored Kennedy Votava.  However, it was the visitors who responded the very next inning to tie it up at three runs each.

Mt. St. Joseph would go on to score in each of the next four innings taking control in the 9-3 win to force a split in each team's opening 2025 DH.

For MSJ, it was Hankenhoff who earned the win in the circle while the loss for Piedmont went to Summer McCranie who appeared in relief for the second time on the day.  McCranie threw four and a third allowing seven hits while giving up four runs while Hankenhoff also came out of the pen to earn the win for MSJ throwing five and two thirds of scoreless softball allowing just a pair of hits and striking out three.

TURNING POINT:
- The turning point in Piedmont's game one victory came in the 5th when a two-run rally from MSJ was stifled by veteran pictcher Steinmeyer with back-to-back outs.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- McCranie picked up the save in game one, the second of her career, with a dominant two-inning performance where she did not allow a hit to MSJ.
- At the plate, Maddi Spieks was the only Lion to post multiple hits in game one going 2-for-4 with a run scored.
- In game two, Maddi Spieks followed up with a mirror image performance adding an RBI to her day.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Piedmont's seven hits came from six different players in the game one win.
- MSJ's best performance in the circle came from a Lion making her collegiate debut with freshman Lesleigh Reimers tossing five-plus innings of shutout softball.
- The freshman pitcher for MSJ in the encore of the DH was dominant retiring the side in three straight innings while a 6th inning walk and a Jasmine Lowery single in the 7th provided Piedmont it's only base runners in the final five innings of game two.

UP NEXT:
- With weather causing changes on the early portion of the '25 schedule, Piedmont will wait 10 days before hosting Alma College in their next game action on the slate.  First pitch in the Monday DH on February 24 is set for 12:00 pm.
