Season Preview: Men's Cross Country

After claiming the Collegiate Conference of the South title in 2023, the Piedmont men's cross country team is looking to repeat as champions in 2024. Their campaign to do so begins Saturday, August 31 at the Berry XC Mixed Relay.

  • The Lions will make five trips during the regular season, including the season-opening mixed relay event at Berry on Saturday, August 31.
  • Staying close to home, the squad will compete at the UNG Invitational in Oakwood, Ga. for the second year in a row on Friday, September 13.
  • Piedmont travels to the Roanoke XC Invitational on Saturday, October 19 before preparing for the conference championship.
  • Belhaven University will host the 2024 CCS Cross Country Championships on Friday, November 1 in Jackson, Miss.

  • Piedmont claimed 2023 CCS Championship in dominant fashion.
  • Junior Layton Bradford finished 2nd overall, turning in a time of 27:35.9.
  • Senior Walker Capelle finished directly behind Bradford in 3rd (27:50.9).
  • Grabbing 7th place, junior Tucker Cox sprinted to the finish line and finished just .01 seconds ahead of the next competitor.
  • Junior Jaden Gonzales and senior Gary Halverson rounded out the top 10 of the meet, securing the Lions championship.
  • Bradford and Capelle earned CCS First Team All-Conference honors while Cox, Gonzales and Halverson picked up CCS Second Team All-Conference honors.
  • At the NCAA South Regional, the team set a new program record, finishing 7th out of 24th schools.
    • Gary Halverson finished 30th individually, earning All-Region honors.

  • The roster sees 2023's best Layton Bradford return for his senior year after leading the pack at the CCS Championship last season.
  • Graduate student Walker Capelle and senior Tucker Cox will look to repeat their success from last season during the 2024 season.
  • Senior Jadon Gonzales is poised to have a strong year.
  • The team sports a brilliant amount of depth and will turn to many different faces to replace the now graduated Gary Halverson.
2024 Men's Cross Country Roster
  • Jamie Jimison is entering his sixth year at Piedmont as Director of Cross Country and Track and Field.
  • In his cross country coaching career as a Lion, Jimison’s teams have never finished lower than fourth in the USA South Conference Championships' men’s and women’s competitions. Now in the CCS, his men's team has the opportunity to defend their 2023 championship.
