Season Recap: Women's Basketball

2023-24 PIEDMONT WOMEN'S BASKETBALL SEASON RECAP

  • The Piedmont women's basketball team delivered its 11th consecutive winning season in 2023-24, with a 15-10 overall record and a 10-6 mark in the team's second season as a member of the Collegiate Conference of the South.
  • Freshman forward Alexandria Willis made her presence known early on, winning multiple CCS Rookie of the Week awards and coming home with CCS Rookie of the Year.
  • The Lions opened the season with back-to-back wins over Berry and Sewanee at the CCS/SAA Classic in LaGrange, Georgia before heading to Roanoke, Virginia to take the title at the Jean Beamer Tipoff Classic, winning games by 24 and 25 points to start the season 4-0.
  • On Senior Day and in the team's regular season finale, the Lions spoiled Berea's quest for an undefeated CCS slate, knocking off the Mountaineers 57-50 in front of the home fans.
  • Piedmont's CCS Tournament run ended at home in first round action, in a hard-fought double overtime loss to Belhaven.

The Lions delivered their 11th consecutive winning season in 2022-23

SEASON HIGHLIGHTS

  • After winning two in a row to start the season at the CCS/SAA Classic, the Lions traveled to Roanoke, Virginia for the Jean Beamer Tipoff Classic.
  • Piedmont opened the tournament with a dominant 79-54 win over Greensboro.
    • With a five point lead heading to the final period, the Lions left no doubt outscoring the Pride 25-5 in the final 10 minutes. 
    • Laken Stiles scored 22 points for a new career-high mark to lead all scorers in the game. 
      Both Andelin Hill and Kennedi Henson added 16 points as well. 
  • The next night, the Lions left no doubt in a 74-50 win over Stevenson to take the tournamen title.
    • Andelin Hill earned tournament MVP honors thanks to her 14 points and seven rebounds which led the Lions in both categories.
    • It was a balanced scoring attack for the Lions as 11 different players scored. Newcomer Kennedi Henson was the only other Lion to reach double figures, as she added 12 points off the bench on 5-of-7 shooting to earn All-Tournament Team honor

 

Greensboro Recap | Stevenson Recap

  • Trailing by one at the break, the Lions used a dominant third quarter to take control and continued to pull away in the fourth for their second straight double-digit conference victory
  • Senior forward Destiny Deetz delivered a career-high 16 points and a season-best 11 rebounds, marking her first career double-double as a Lion. The Tiger, Georgia native came off the bench and delivered key production in just 26 minutes of action.
  • Fellow seniors Ashley Scott and Laken Stiles pitched in big-time performances as well, with Scott scoring a season-high 20 points on 5-of-11 from beyond the arc, while Stiles nearly pulled off a triple-double, with 15 points, seven rebounds and a team-high six assists.

  • Piedmont women's basketball spoiled Berea's bid at an undefeated conference season, besting the Mountaineers with a 57-50 Senior Day victory on Saturday afternoon at Cave Arena.
  • The Lions held the Mountaineers scoreless for the first 8:42 of the contest and held off a furious late rally to earn the win
  • Piedmont forced 10 first quarter turnovers from Berea to build an 8-0 lead and a 10-2 advantage at the end of the opening quarter.
  • On the day she was honored as part of Senior Day festivities, Ashley Scott led the Lions once again, scoring 15 points including some crucial buckets down the stretch. Freshman Alexandria Willis was the only other Lion to reach double figures, adding 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting and seven rebounds.

  • Alexandria Willis set the program record by winning four conference rookie of the week awards during the season, culminating with a CCS Rookie of the Year nod.
  • Ashley Scott earned All-CCS honors for the second straight season.
  • Andelin Hill and Laken Stiles were named to the All-CCS Second Team
