COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Piedmont University softball program dropped both of their Saturday contests at the NFCA Leadoff Classic. The Lions dropped Game 1 to Bethel in a pitchers duel before being no-hit by Roanoke in Game 2.
GAME 1 - Piedmont 1, Bethel 2
In a battle in the circle, Piedmont starter
Megan Steinmeyer fought to keep the Royals off the board as the Piedmont offense looked to find its' footing late in the game.
Neither offense was able to break through until late in the contest, with just seven hits between the two squads through five full innings. It was Bethel who got on the board first, plating the first run of the contest in the top of the sixth inning.
The Lions looked to respond in the bottom half of the inning, putting two on with no one out. However, Piedmont remained unable to manufacture a run and trailed heading into the final inning of play.
The Royals again scored in the top half of the inning, leaving Piedmont trailing by two with just three outs to work with. For the second inning in a row, Piedmont put the first two batters on base, bringing the winning run to the plate with no one out. They would go on to score one in the inning but leave the tying run on the bases as the contest closed 2-1 in favor of Bethel
GAME 2 - Piedmont 0, Roanoke 8
Roanoke opened the scoring in the game with three runs in the top of the second, quickly forcing the Lions to turn it over to the bullpen. The damage did not stop as the Maroons plated four more runs in the third off the Piedmont pin before adding the eight and final run in the sixth.
On the offensive end, the Lions remained hit-less throughout the contest, with the only base runners coming on four walks.
