COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Piedmont softball team was unable to contain defending national champions and current No. 1 Trine University, suffering a 17-0 loss in five innings on Thursday afternoon in Columbus, Georgia.

With the NFCA Leadoff Classic schedule altered due to expected inclement weather, the Lions opened the tournament a day early than originally scheduled.

Trine left no doubt as to the outcome from the very beginning, blitzing the Lions for 10 runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Thunder then added a single run in the second, four more in the third and two more in the fourth before closing out Piedmont in the top of the fifth.

Freshman Kaylee Wilson tallied the lone hit on the day for the Lions, who committed five errors in the field.

Up next, the Lions will only play one contest on Friday due to impending inclement weather. Piedmont will now battle Concordia Univ. (Wis.) at 7 p.m. and the contest against Wartburg will not be played Friday.
