Piedmont Women's Tennis Rolls Over Truett McConnell 6-1, Sweeps Agnes Scott 9-0

DEMOREST, Ga. - The Piedmont women's tennis team improved to 5-1 on the season and picked up its first CCS win of the season in doubleheader action on Wednesday afternoon.

Splitting their squad on Wednesday, one group of Lions traveled to Cleveland, Georgia and dispatched of Truett McConnell 6-1 while another group stayed home and rolled to a 9-0 sweep over Agnes Scott in the team's conference opener.

Match 1: Piedmont 6, Truett McConnell 1

Playing NAIA rules against the Bears, the Lions took the doubles point by winning at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles easily and then fought out a win in a breaker at No. 1 for good measure.

Freshman Brooklyn Bolch and sophomore Jordan Ballard got things started with a 6-1 triumph at No. 3 before Sarah Row and Mia Vasher clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win at No. 2. Then, with the point already in hand, the duo of Marion Sloyan and Alyssa McSpadden battled to win a breaker at No. 1 doubles for the clean sweep.

Singles action saw the Lions tested in a few matches, but ultimately come out on top in 5-of-6 to win the match. First, it was Vasher who delivered a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 5 to make it 2-0 Piedmont.

Sloyan then dispatched of her opponent 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 to put the Lions within a point of clinching. Ballard then delivered the clincher, moving to 2-0 on the day with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 3.

Freshman Drea Robinson improved to 2-0 in dual matches on the season, battling back from dropping her opening set to win the second in dominant fashion before taking a third-set match tiebreaker 10-5.

Row picked up a 6-4 ,6-2 win at No. 4 to make it 6-0 Piedmont, but Truett McConnell was able to salvage a point with a win at No. 2.

Match 2: Piedmont 9, Agnes Scott 0

The Lions left no doubt in a dominant shutout of the Scotties. Doubles action saw Piedmont drop just one game through the three matches as reigning CCS Doubles Team of the Week Dannie Evans and Brook Patton (8-0) cruised at No. 3 while Abbey Grace Venham and Bri Laidman (8-0) did the same. Dakota Wilkes and Olivia Carpenter delivered an 8-1 win at No. 2 to make it 3-0 heading into singles.

Singles saw the Lions win four of the six matches without dropping a game. Laidman won first at No. 3 in perfect order before freshman Daisha Thompson earned the clincher with a perfect 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5. 

Wilkes won 6-0, 6-0 fresh off being named CCS Player of the Week earlier in the day while Abby Gayle Moody (6-1, 6-0) lost just one game en route to a win at No. 6.

Venham (6-0, 6-0) did not drop a game at No. 1 before Patton (2-6, 6-1, 1-0 (3)) battled back from dropping her first set to win the second easily and roll in a third-set match breaker to give the Lions a 9-0 home win for the second consecutive day.
