Third Quarter Surge Lifts Lions to Victory Over Rhodes

Records: Piedmont, 1-1; Rhodes 1-1

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Thanks to a strong third quarter, the Piedmont women's basketball team earned a 79-62 win over Rhodes on Saturday. The win is the first of the 24-25 season as the Lions split over opening weekend.

Neither team was out of the gate hot, as Rhodes led 16-13 at the end of the first. Piedmont pulled ahead 20-19 on a Ashley Scott 3-pointer with 6:45 to go till the half, but Rhodes would continue to charge back leading 31-24 with 1:17 on the clock.

An 8-0 run in the final minute put the Lions in front again just before the half as Scott hit a pull-up jumper inside the final 10 seconds to give the Lions the lead 32-31 at the break. Piedmont used that momentum out of the break to put together a strong third quarter and leave no doubt.

The Lions were able to score 28 points in the third quarter and claim a 60-47 lead at the end of three. Piedmont did not let up with another 19 points in the fourth quarter to outscore Rhodes 47-31 in the second half.

Piedmont shot 95% from the free throw line on Saturday missing just one going 19-of-20. That created a nine-point swing as Rhodes had just 10 points from the charity stripe.

Up next, the Lions will be on the road at Oglethorpe on Tuesday, November 12 at 6 p.m.
