Piedmont 216, Columbia 22
TALLULAH FALLS, Ga. - The Piedmont University men's swimming team dominated their season-opening meet at home, besting Columbia College by a score of 216-22. Senior
Leandro Forero broke the school record in the 1000 yard freestyle, which he had previously set two years ago. In addition to the record, he also won the 100 yard butterfly (55.57), 500 yard freestyle (5:00.77)
The men kicked off the meet with the 200 yard medley relay, where
Reid Barnes,
Erick Fortner,
Henry Rickman and
Sam Teed posted a 1:40.27.
Murphy O'Brien claimed the 200 yard freestyle, swimming a 1:55.82 while Barnes claimed the win in the 50 yard backstroke (26.39). O'Brien also went on to win the 100 yard backstroke in 57.46 and the 100 yard IM in1:00.01 later on in the meet.
In one of the closest races of the meet,
Erick Fortner held off
Sam Teed by just .46 seconds to win the 50 yard breaststroke (28.21). Fortner also held off Teed in the 100 yard breaststroke, this time by just .92 seconds (1:03.32).
With a 23.77,
Baden Stewart narrowly bested
Alex Pangelinan by just over one second in the 50 yard freestyle to take the win.
Newcomer
Henry Rickman picked up his first win in the 100 yard freestyle, turning in a time of 51.10. Fellow newcomer
Preston Allen took home the win in the 50 yard butterfly (25.42), besting Pangelinan by just .29 seconds.
Piedmont closed out the meet with a relay win as Forero, Stewart, Rickman and Fortner combined for a 1:31.86 in the 200 yard freestyle relay.
