ROME, Ga. - The Piedmont University men's swimming team fell just short against Berry in their second dual of the week. Following their narrow win Monday afternoon, Piedmont faced a tough Vikings program just 24 hours after finishing the day before.
The Lions hung around early, picking up second place finishes in the 200 yard medley relay and 1000 yard freestyle.
For the second day in a row, Murphy O'Brien picked up the first win for the Lions. Once again winning the 100 yard backstroke, his time of 57.07 bested the challenger from Berry by .36.
Erick Fortner followed O'Brien's win with one of his own, taking the 100 yard breaststroke in 1.00.74.
The Lions turned out big in 50 yard freestyle, taking first, second and third place. Ross Coppedge narrowly won the event in 23.13, with Alex Pangelinan just .33 seconds behind him (23.46). Sam Teed rounded out the top 3 with a time of 23.50.
In the 100 yard freestyle, Perry Westbrook found success as his time of 49.93 earned him the win in the event.
O'Brien continued his brilliant day, once again getting back in the winner category. Turning in a 2:03.88 in the 200 yard freestyle, he picked up key points for Lions and gave them a chance to win the dual down the final stretch.
Leandro Forero dominated the 500 yard freestyle in one of the last events of the day, winning the event by over 13 seconds (5:07.78).
In the final two events of the day, Fortner grabbed second (2:05.73) in the 200 yard IM while Borgmann, Westrbrook, Forero and Coppedge grabbed second in the 400 yard freestyle relay. However, the Vikings grabbed the wins in both events, securing the meet winning points with the victories.
