DEMOREST, Ga. - The Piedmont women's basketball team stifled the Covenant offense in a 59-37 win at Cave Arena on a rainy Thursday night in Demorest.
Points were hard to come by for both teams, but especially the Scots, as the Piedmont defense held them to just 26.2 percent shooting and forced 31 turnovers.
The Lions dominated the paint on Thursday night, with
Alexandria Willis and
Andelin Hill leading the way offensively. Willis led the team with 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting while adding seven rebounds and a pair of steals. Hill found her way into double figures as well, contributing 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Covenant led just once the entire game, at 2-0 in the opening minute before the Lions overtook them from that point forward. The Piedmont defense held the Scots to single digits in each quarter except for the fourth, when the game was out of reach.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first quarter, Piedmont scored nine consecutive points to extend the lead to 9-2. Hill then scored six of her 10 points to spark a 9-0 Piedmont run over the final 3:07 of the opening quarter to give the Lions a 21-7 lead going into the second quarter.
The second period was a defensive slugfest, with neither team reaching double digits in the quarter as the Lions doubled up the Scots 30-15 at the break.
From there, the Lions continued to swarm on the defensive end, leading by as many as 24 points and never letting the Scots back in the game in the second half to cruise to the victory.
