GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The 14
th-ranked Piedmont University softball team started play in its third consecutive NCAA Regional Tournament on Friday afternoon, but the Lady Lions fell 4-1 to the red-hot Hiram Terriers to send them to the loser's bracket for the remainder of the tournament.
Piedmont didn't take advantage of opportunities like it usually does in the opening game on Friday, and as a result the Lady Lions will have their backs against the wall as they face the loser of Berry and DePauw in an elimination game on Saturday.
Fresh off a run to the North Coast Athletic Conference championship over DePauw last week on the same field as this weekend's regional, the Terriers came into the Greencastle Regional as one of the hottest teams in all of Division III, and they kept that streak alive with a resounding win on Friday.
After a leadoff home run from Hiram's Abriana Schwartz, Piedmont starter
MARTINA MALOCH settled in as she usually does and held the Terriers scoreless in each of the next three innings.
Hiram loaded the bases in the second inning and had a chance to break the game open, but a pair of ground ball outs ended the threat.
Piedmont finally got on the board in the fourth as a two-out single from
EMMA MCBRAYER kept the inning alive and lead to three-straight walks to produce the game-tying run.
HANNAH SMITH drew a five-pitch walk against the new Hiram pitcher Darian Kanno to earn an RBI and knot the game at 1-1.
Pinch-hitter
MADISON HENRY would go down on strikes in the next at-bat after a good battle with Kanno to leave the bases loaded.
After avoiding potential disaster in the field, the Terriers loaded the bases themselves in the next half inning. Three runs would come home in the frame as Hiram went ahead 4-1, but the Terriers ran themselves into a double play to end the inning.
That big frame for the Terriers proved to be the difference as Piedmont would strand five base runners over the next two innings as game-tying opportunities went by the wayside.
Kanno worked her way out of trouble multiple times and held on to earn her 11
th win of the season.
