Offense Leads Lady Lions to Sweep of Covenant on Friday

Game 2 Score: Piedmont 6, Covenant 4
Records: Piedmont 22-9 (11-1 USAS); Covenant 19-14 (9-5 USAS)

DEMOREST, Ga. – Piedmont University's softball team got tested on Friday afternoon in a wild and unpredictable doubleheader, but the Lady Lions escaped with a pair of wins over the Covenant Scots to claim their seventh doubleheader sweep of the season.

The Lady Lions outlasted the Scots 10-8 in a back-and-forth contest in game one before a game-winning, two-RBI single in the sixth inning from KAITLIN ISLEY gave them a sweep with a 6-4 game two victory.

Game 1 – Piedmont 10, Covenant 8

Piedmont and Covenant engaged in a slugfest in game one on Friday as 18 total runs came home in the affair thanks to 27 total hits by the two teams. Covenant got on the board with a pair of runs in the top of the first, but a five spot in the bottom half put the Lady Lions out front 5-2.

That first inning set the stage for the rest of the game as the Scots came right back with three more runs in the top of the second to even the score. Piedmont went back in front in the bottom half when Isley scored on an RBI single from MADISON HENRY.

Piedmont starter EMMA MCBRAYER pitched a clean top of the third inning, the first scoreless inning of the day, to set the stage for her teammates to plate two more runs in the bottom of the frame, pushing the lead to 8-5.

Covenant plated three more to even the score at 8-8 in the top of the fourth, but the offense stayed relentless for Piedmont as HANNAH CALLAWAY scored the go-ahead run in the bottom half on a sacrifice fly from LYNDZI PARTLOW.

Isley would score an insurance run in the sixth on a KARA TAYLOR RBI single to push the lead to 10-8, which proved to be just enough for McBrayer and the defense to work with.

The Scots were held scoreless in the final three innings of the game despite sending the go-ahead run to the plate in the top of the seventh, but McBrayer got Lauren Kay to fly out to left to end the wacky first game.

McBrayer and Covenant's Lauren Kierpa both pitched complete games despite the flurry of offense from both sides, with McBrayer emerging with her 11th win of the season. Taylor, Henry, McBrayer, and Partlow each tallied multi-hit games to help lead Piedmont's offense in game one.

Game 2 – Piedmont 6, Covenant 4

Game two lacked some of the flare that game one showcased, but it certainly didn't lack any drama.

A fielder's choice RBI for Jordan Holman gave the Scots a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, and that score would hold until the third when Kay scored on a Taylor Murdock single to make it 2-0 Scots.

Piedmont answered right back and tied the game in the bottom of the inning when LEXI CHITWOOD and REBEKAH STEGMAYER both scored on an Isley double.

The two sides traded two-run frames in the fifth inning to make it 4-4 heading to the sixth. Piedmont starter MARTINA MALOCH worked a clean top half of the inning to set up her teammates with a chance to take the lead in the bottom half.

With two outs and two runners on, the Lady Lions executed a delayed double steal that saw DREW GRAHAM steal third while HANNAH SMITH headed to second. That aggressiveness set up Isley with a chance for a big play, and the junior delivered with a single up the middle to score both runners and give Piedmont a 6-4 edge.

Maloch pitched a 1-2-3 top of the seventh, aided by catcher HANNAH MORGAN throwing out a would-be base stealer, to send the Lions to another dramatic conference sweep. Maloch earned the win as she allowed just two earned runs in the game despite giving up 11 hits.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- KAITLIN ISLEY improved her season batting average to .500 after going 4-for-5 at the plate over the two games with three runs scored and five RBIs. Four of her RBIs came in game two.
- LYNDZI PARTLOW played a big role in game one as she went 2-for-3 at the plate with a sac fly RBI and a run scored to go with two stolen bases.
- REBEKAH STEGMAYER scored three runs on the day to go with three walks and two hits, one of which was a triple.

UP NEXT:
- The Lady Lions have their final regular season road trip of the year on Tuesday, April 19, when they take on the LaGrange Panthers. The doubleheader in LaGrange, Georgia is slated to begin at 2:00 p.m.
