TUSKEGEE, Ala. - The Piedmont women's tennis team delivered a 7-0 shutout on Sunday afternoon at Tuskegee to open its 2022 season.
The Lady Lions cruised to win all three doubles matches and won all six singles lines on their way to the victory.
With Tuskegee only having five available players, Piedmont won No. 3 doubles by default, meaning it needed just one of the two doubles matches to jump in front 1-0.
The No. 2 doubles team of
MAGGIE MOODY and
MELISSA GISH cruised to a 6-2 win to give Piedmont the early edge while freshman
ALYSSA MCSPADDEN teamed with reigning USA South Player of the Year
IMANI VINCENT to emerge victorious 6-4 at No. 1 doubles.
Tuskegee was forced to forfeit No. 6 singles, which meant after
ABBEY GRACE VENHAM polished off a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 1, the Lady Lions needed just one more win to clinch the match.
Vincent proved to be up to the task, putting Piedmont up 4-0 with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 2.
Although the match was in hand, the Lady Lions remained in control in the remaining three matches. McSpadden picked up her first career dual singles win in dominant fashion (6-0, 6-0) before Gish (6-3, 6-1) cruised at No. 3 while
DAKOTA WILKES battled through a tough first set and closed things out with a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 5.
Up next, the Lady Lions will open their home slate next Saturday, Feb. 12 at 1:30 p.m. against Birmingham-Southern. Piedmont defeated the Panthers twice in Birmingham last season.
TURNING POINT:
- The Lady Lions were dominant throughout, winning all of their matches in convincing fashion.
