DEMOREST, Ga. - The top-seeded Piedmont women's soccer team will play in the first ever Collegiate Conference of the South Championship Final as it advanced past Covenant 1-0 on a beautiful Wednesday night in Demorest.
The Lady Lions dominated possession and the shot count in both halves and
ELISSA LOTTER played hero, scoring the only goal of the game early in the second half.
Â
Piedmont continued to play stifling defense, holding the Scots to four total shots and delivering its seventh consecutive shutout against a conference foe.
Much like the regular season matchup between the two teams, neither side was able to find the back of the net in the early going, but on Wednesday, the Lady Lions were knocking on the door for much of the first half.
KAYLEE KING had two looks in the first 45 minutes, but both sailed wide. Piedmont's best chance in the first half came late as a low cross from
MADI GALLARELLI found the foot of freshman Paige Kluba. However, Covenant goalkeeper Lucy Sandhoff was their for the save to keep things scoreless going into the break.
Needing to find just one crack in the Covenant defense, that moment came in the 53rd minute.
EMMA WILLIAMS delivered a perfectly placed diagonal through ball that found the foot of
ABBY JUDGE, who fed a perfect low cross to find the Lotter dashing to the back post and the finish past Sandhoff.
Â
Piedmont continued to give itself chances in the final 30+ minutes of action and
HAYLEE DORNANÂ came up with a few key saves to keep the Scots off the scoreboard.
Up next, Piedmont will host No. 2 seed Maryville in the CCS Final. The game time is set for this Saturday, Nov. 5 at 2 p.m.
TURNING POINT:
- The beautiful double assist from Williams to Judge to Lotter proved to be all the Lady Lions needed in the 1-0 victory.
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- After not scoring throughout the regular season, Lotter has now found the back of the net in two consecutive postseason games for the Lady Lions.
NEWS AND NOTES:
- Piedmont exacted revenge on Covenant after the Scots eliminated the Lions in last season's USA South Championship Final.
- This will mark the fourth time in the last five seasons that Piedmont has played for a conference tournament title.
