WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Piedmont University's swimming teams showed no signs of rust on Saturday as the Lions made easy work of their dual opponents in the first meet of 2022 and the first even for the programs in over two months.
The Lions took down Greensboro, Warren Wilson, and the host school Salem College in a pair of dual meets on Saturday morning to get things rolling once again for head coach Teddy Guyer's group. It was Piedmont second of three currently scheduled meetings with Warren Wilson with the Lions taking each of the first two meetings.
Piedmont individuals and relay teams combined to win a dominating 24 out of the 28 total races swam on Saturday.
Freshman
LEANDRO FORERO led the way for the Piedmont men as he captured four total victories across the meet, including the men's first win of the day in the 200 Yard Medley Relay.
ZANE MORGAN,
JON BROWN, Forero, and
ROSS COPPEDGE put down a time of 1:48.25 to earn a nearly 3.5-second victory.
The closest of Forero's three individual wins came in the 100 Yard Backstroke as his race-winning time of 1:01.65 was just under one second better than Greensboro's Ethan Wilson.
Forero got help in the scoring from sophomore
JON BROWN who totaled three event wins on the day (two as an individual) and freshman
ERICK FORTNER, who also nabbed a pair of wins throughout the day.
The Piedmont women made sure a Lady Lion was victorious in each race on Saturday, and nobody found more success than freshman
MADISON NANCE. Nance totaled six race wins for her six entries on Saturday, picking up wins in each freestyle, breaststroke, and individual medley races.
Sophomore
GWYNETH THOMAS tried to match the success of Nance and picked up four wins of her own at the meet, including a pair of individual wins in each the 100 and 200 Yard Backstroke events.
Both of Thomas' backstroke races had winning margins of five seconds or more.
LIZZIE ARRENDALE (3),
LAUREN STONE (2), and
OLIVIA BECHTEL (2) each had multiple race wins on Saturday as well.
Piedmont won't have to wait as long between meets this time as the Lions as scheduled to compete next Saturday, February 5, versus William Peace and Warren Wilson in Asheville, North Carolina.
