LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - For the second time in five days, the Piedmont women's basketball team trounced Covenant, this time in a 63-50 road win in Lookout Mountain.
Much like Friday night's matchup in Demorest, the Lady Lions and Scots battled closely in the first quarter before Piedmont made its move by pulling away in the second and third quarters.
Three Lady Lions scored in double figures led by
KLAIRE VARNEY, who delivered 16 points to go with three assists and three steals.
NAKIYAH WASHINGTON scored in double figures for the fifth consecutive game, with 14 points and a season-best three blocks.
LIVIA SKINNER continued her outstanding season wand a team-high five steals.
Once again, it was the Piedmont pressure defense that proved critical, as it forced 31 turnovers by the Scots and committed only 19.
The Lady Lions led the entire game. However, after an 8-2 Piedmont run to start things off in the first quarter, Covenant battled back to trail by only four going to the second quarter.
Defense was the story in the second quarter as Piedmont was able to increase its lead despite scoring just 11 points in the period. Covenant was held to just two field goals and failed to reach 20 points in the first half as the Lady Lions led 27-18 going into the locker room.
After the Scots cut their deficit to 30-22 early in the third quarter, Piedmont ripped off a quick 12-0 run over just 2:09 of game action to extend its lead to 42-22, proving too much of a deficit for Covenant to overcome.
While the Scots battled back in the fourth quarter with its highest scoring quarter of the contest (18 points), it was not enough as Piedmont prevailed for the seventh straight game.
Up next, the Lady Lions return home to Cave Arena tomorrow night to host Brevard at 6 p.m.
