RALEIGH, N.C. – Piedmont's men's and women's swimming teams got back to action over the weekend and put together a dominating performance at Sunday's Pacer Invitational.
The Lions men defeated both William Peace and Greensboro in dual meet action while the Piedmont women took down William Peace, Greensboro, and Pfeiffer. In total, the Lions combined to win 15 events.
Right out of the gates, the women's 200-yard medley relay team set the stage for a fun afternoon as
KATHERINE STIGALL,
ASHLEY PUGH, Grace Nestorik, and
ADRIANA MARTIN legged out a narrow victory with a 2:05.77 final time. The Lions just managed to outpace the William Peace relay team by 0.12 of a second.
As it turned out, the 200-yard medley relay was just the beginning of an eventful day for Stigall. The freshman would go on to win a pair of individual, but neither by more than a second and a half.
In the women's 200-yard individual medley, Stigall's 2:36.25 beat out Pfeiffer's Samira Wolf's 2:37.38 in a close battle. She later got the job done with a 1:13.07 in the 100-yard backstroke to beat Pfeiffer's Nyah Hines' 1:13.76 in one of the closes finishes on the day.
Freshman
LAUREN STONE joined Stigall on the podium with two wins of her own in the 1000-yard freestyle and 500-yard backstroke events.
On the men's side, four different Lions found their way to event wins as
JON BROWN,
ROSS COPPEDGE, and
MATTHEW LUTHER each took home two events and
MICHAEL TAPPLER grabbed one victory. The narrowest of those victories was Coppedge's win the 50-yard freestyle as his 21.85 winning time was exactly two seconds ahead of second place.
To cap off the impressive day, both the men's and women's 200-yard freestyle teams claimed close victories. The women's group featuring Liz Arrendale, Martin, Stone, and
GILLIAN LLOYD clocked a 1:52.95 and sneaked out a win by just 0.07 of a second over Pfeiffer's relay team.
That set the stage for the men's team of
BRYCE KORNEGAY,
ALEC LONG, Luther, and
MASON SWANEY to take their race by more than three seconds over William Peace.
Piedmont's impressive inaugural season rolls on this coming weekend as the Lions are set to compete in the Georgia Small College Championships in Valley, Alabama on February 12-13.
