MARYVILLE, Tenn. - Behind standout performances from
LIVIA SKINNER and
NAKIYAH WASHINGTON, the Piedmont women's basketball team completed its perfect USA South season, holding off Maryville, 76-65, on Sunday afternoon at the Cooper Athletic Center.
The Lady Lions won all 12 of its conference games, going undefeated in the USA South for the first time in program history. The win also marks the second time in the last three seasons that they have finished atop the USA South West Division.
After only scoring four points in Saturday's win and being saddled with foul trouble, Skinner exploded for a conference season-best 27 points on 5-of-8 from beyond the arc. Washington added 21 points, her seventh game this season with 20 or more, and tacked on six steals and five rebounds as well.
Unlike yesterday, PC took the lead late in the first quarter and led the rest of the way. Trailing 15-14 in the final minute of the opening period, Skinner's three-pointer put the Lady Lions up 17-15 and they never trailed from that point.
Piedmont was able to take full control with a dominant second quarter, outscoring the Scots (10-2, 10-2 USA South) 21-9 in the period. The Lady Lions used a 14-0 run early in the quarter to build a game-high 15-point lead midway through the second.
Leading by 15 at the break, Piedmont allowed Maryville back into the contest as the Scots erupted for 24 points in the third quarter. The Scots' Klaire Varney knocked in all three free throw attempts in the final seconds of the third to cut the PC lead to 54-47.
Although Maryville was able to cut its deficit to 56-51 early in the fourth,
LAKEN STILES answered with her only field goal of the game, a much-needed three-pointer to bring the Piedmont lead back up to nine. From there, the Scots were never able to pull closer than six points, as PC had an answer each time the game tightened.
The win gives Piedmont the No. 1 seed for the upcoming USA South West Division Tournament. The Lady Lions are slated to host No. 4 seed Brevard in the semifinals this Wednesday, March 3. Game time is to be determined.
