Lions' Rally Comes up Short in 8-5 loss at #18 BSC
NEED TO KNOW:
Score: BSC 8, Piedmont 5
Records: BSC 7-0; Piedmont 0-2

BIRMINGHAM, ALA. – Piedmont College's softball team staged a lake comeback in its Friday afternoon game at 18th-ranked Birmingham-Southern, but the Lions fell short on their comeback trail and dropped their second straight game to open the 2021 campaign.

The Lions (0-2 overall) fell behind early and were held scoreless until a breakthrough top of the fifth inning, but the late rally wasn't enough in an 8-5 defeat.
Piedmont gave up three runs early on as three-straight two-out hits, including a Kailey Walters two-run home run, put the Lions in an early hole.

The Panthers added one insurance run in each the third and fourth innings, but the Lions minimized that damage as freshman right fielder LEXI CHITWOOD gunned down another would-be run scorer to end the 4th inning thanks to a relay throw from third baseman HANNAH SMITH.

That defensive momentum changed the tides as the Lions jumped on the Panthers in the next inning, rattling off four runs and chasing the Panthers' starter Annie Clayton.

Piedmont's inning started with a walk and stolen base from TK SAULS, who then scored on a MACIE ALLEN single. Allen later scored on Chitwood's RBI groundout before a walk to REBEKAH STEGMAYER led to a pitching change.

A two-run single from KATELYN PERRY brought the score to within one and changed the outlook for the Lions. In the next inning, the Lions tied the game as a TK SAULS' single scored pinch-runner KAITLIN ISLEY to make it a 5-5 ballgame.

Despite that change in momentum, the Panthers regrouped and answered back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth inning to put Piedmont back in a hole.

The Lions managed two hits but no runs in the top of the seventh inning as they dropped their second straight game to a ranked opponent to start the season.

Freshman reliver EMMA MCBRAYER, the second of three pitchers used by the Lions, was saddled with the loss after allowing the first baserunners of the Panthers' three-run sixth inning. McBrayer pitched 2.1 innings while allowing two earned runs and striking out one.

TURNING POINT:
- Chitwood and Smith's relay to cut down a Panther runner at home sparked a rally for the Lions' offense and changed the whole game, despite the rally falling a bit short.
- Leah Wood's double to start the bottom of the sixth spelled trouble for the Lions and set the table for BSC's statement inning.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- KATELYN PERRY notched a pair of RBIs with her lone hit to be the only Lion with more than one RBI.
- KARA TAYLOR had two hits to be the only Lion with multiple. KAITLIN ISLEY pinch ran for her once and stole two bases that led to her scoring the game-tying run.
