Â
DEMOREST, Ga. – The Piedmont women's basketball team raced past Covenant for the second straight day, winning 73-45 at Cave Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Â
The Lady Lions (4-3, 2-0 USA South) swept the weekend series with the Scots (1-9, 0-2 USA South) thanks to a balanced scoring effort that saw four players score in double figures and 12 players find the basket.
Â
Winning by nearly the exact same score as Friday night's 70-45 triumph, Piedmont once again used a dominant second quarter run to establish control. Although the Scots were able to hang tough in the third, PC erased any doubt with a dominant final period.
Â
Freshman guard
LU WOOLFOLK led the Lady Lions with 13 points and four assists while
LIVIA SKINNER and
NAKIYAH WASHINGTON added 12 each. Despite dealing with foul trouble for much of the contest,
HOPE FRANKLIN was the fourth and final player in double figures with 11 points and five rebounds in 16 minutes.
Â
For the second straight night, the Scots started strong early, connecting on three three-pointers in the first quarter which allowed them to head to the second with the game knotted at 15 apiece.
Â
However, the Lady Lions used an 11-0 run early in the second to extend their lead to double digits. From there, PC continued to extend its lead and took a 35-22 edge to the locker room.
Â
Unlike Friday night, Covenant emerged from the locker room and cut into its deficit early in the third quarter, but Washington's layup in the final seconds of the period gave Piedmont a 16-point lead, its largest of the contest to that point.
Â
Piedmont saved its most dominant play for the final quarter, outscoring the Scots, 20-7, to emerge victorious by the final margin of 28 points.
Â
The win now gives the Lady Lions five in a row over Covenant.
Â
Up next, PC will take to the road for a pair of contests at Brevard starting next Friday, Jan. 22 at 5 p.m.
