Softball Concludes Arizona Trip with 2-1 Extra Inning Loss to No. 4 East Texas Baptist

NEED TO KNOW:

Records: East Texas Baptist, 14-0; Piedmont, 6-7

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Piedmont College softball team took No. 4 East Texas Baptist to extra innings, but fell, 2-1, on Sunday morning at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Tucson.

The game was scoreless through six until the Tigers (14-0) broke the scoreless tie in the top of the seventh.

Piedmont (6-7) was down to its final out in the bottom of the seventh when KAYLEE WHITE came through with a single to right field to bring home KATLYN ANDRIN.

However, the Lady Lions left the potential winning runs on base before East Texas Baptist manufactured the eventual winning run in the top of the eighth.

The Tigers had a runner placed on second base to start the inning and used a sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly to jump ahead 2-1.

KATELYN PERRY was placed on second and PC was able to load the bases thanks to two walks, but the Tigers induced an infield pop out to seal the victory.

MARTINA MALOCH pitched an outstanding game, throwing all eight innings and allowing just two runs while striking out three without a walk.

Up next, the Lady Lions will have almost a week off before returning to action with a doubleheader at N.C. Wesleyan next Saturday, March 14 at 1 p.m.

TURNING POINT:
- With the extra-inning rule of placing a runner on second base to start the inning in place, the Tigers took advantage and were able to manufacture the winning run with a sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- KAYLEE WHITE (2-for-3), HANNAH MORGAN (2-for-3) and KATLYN ANDRIN (2-for-3) each produced multi-hit games for the Lady Lions.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- The Lady Lions stranded 11 runners on base for the contest including seven total over their last three innings at the dish.
