CALHOUN, Ga. - This past weekend, the Piedmont College Cycling program raced in Calhoun, Ga. at the Georgia Tech Road Race and Criterium.
Starting the road race for the Lions in the Collegiate Men's B/C field were
SAM RIDEOUT and
JADEN GRIMES. Rideout and Grimes took control of the race with both covering moves and keeping the pack together for a field sprint at the end. Rideout and Grimes finished 2nd and 6th. Rideout's results would earn him his Collegiate A upgrade.
In the Collegiate Women's A race,
MADELINE PEARCE represented the Lions. Being the lone Lion in the field, Pearce raced smart by staying in the main field and out of heavy cross winds. After about 50 miles of racing, Pearce finished 7th.
The Collegiate Men's A rode for a long 70 miles, and the windy conditions would prove to be tough with many riders getting popped out the back. Throughout the race, the A men worked together staying out of the cross winds. Coming down to the final few kilometers, the main field was still together and Piedmont's A men decided to setup
DYLAN CANTRELL for the potential win. Coming down the final stretch,
CONLEY WILHELM and Lachlan Holiday led-out Cantrell for a 3rd place finish.
Sunday was Crit day in downtown Calhoun. Starting the day off for the Lions was
MADELINE PEARCE in the Collegiate Women's A race. In the race, Pearce jumped on the wheel of two Milligan riders and the three riders would work together lapping the main field. Pearce would finish 3rd for the day.
Next up for the Lions was
JADEN GRIMES in the Collegiate Men's B/C field. Grimes raced smart throughout the race and made sure no one soloed away from the main field. Coming out of the final turn, Grimes was in good position for a podium finish, finishing 3rd for the day. Grimes has been improving every weekend, and with more results like this weekend, he is well on his way of becoming a Collegiate A rider.
Finishing the day for the Lions were the Collegiate Men's A.
NATE MOSER found himself in a breakaway halfway through the race, and not long after
DYLAN CANTRELL decided to bridge to the breakaway. With two teammates in the breakaway, Piedmont's
CONLEY WILHELM, Lachlan Holiday,
CODY PARKER and
SAM RIDEOUT worked together in the main field to keep others from trying to chase down the breakaway. Coming around the last turn for the finish, Cantrell took the downhill and tailwind to his advantage by taking the win, and teammate Moser finished 4th.
Catch the Lions in action next weekend on March 14 at the Lake Russell Wildlife Management. The Lions will be racing on gravel and trails for this year's Assault on Currahee.
