DEMOREST, Ga. – The Piedmont College softball team opened the 2020 season with a doubleheader sweep of Meredith at home Saturday. The Lady Lions claimed a 7-5 win to start the season and followed up with an 8-4 win in game two.
Game 1: Piedmont 7, Meredith 5
Piedmont was dominant from the start on Saturday as
MARTINA MALOCH allowed just one hit in the first inning before the Piedmont offense stole the show. The Avenging Angels struggled defensively in the opening inning with three errors as Piedmont led 4-0 after three hits and three errors in the frame.
Maloch kept Meredith off the board until the fifth inning when they scored two runs on three hits to make it 4-2. Piedmont added a run in the bottom of the fifth and another pair in the sixth inning for good measure.
Maloch was relieved on the mound temporarily by
RACHEL OBERHOLTZER but after three runs scored, Maloch was brought back on to record the final two outs and close out the game.
Game 2: Piedmont 8, Meredith 4
ABBEY ARRINGTON earned her first start for the Lady Lions and picked up her first win tossing 4.1 innings allowing five hits and four runs while striking out two Saturday. Maloch earned the save in game two pitching the final 2.2 innings giving up just one hit.
It was the Avenging Angels who struck first in game two with a run in the top of the first. In the third, the Lady Lions' offense exploded for six runs to take a commanding 6-1 lead. Piedmont batted around in the inning as
DREW GRAHAM started and finished the frame at the plate.
Meredith had their own big inning in the fifth scoring three runs as Arrington was relieved by Maloch who recorded the final two outs in the fifth.
KATLYN ANDRIN added two back for the Lady Lions in the inning with a two-RBI single to right making it 8-4.
Three Lady Lions had multi-hit performances as
HANNAH MORGAN,
MADISON GARRETT and Andrin all had two hits. Andrin led the way with four RBI.
Up next, Piedmont will head to Raleigh, N.C. next weekend for the Grand Slam Tournament beginning action Friday at noon against Arcadia University.
TURNING POINT:
--Piedmont's four runs in the first inning of game one set the tone for the contest after the Avenging Angels had three errors in the frame.
--The Lady Lions again had a big inning to thank for the victory with six runs scored in the third inning of game two on four hits.
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:

MARTINA MALOCH earned her first collegiate win and save for the Lady Lions with a win in game one and the save in game two.

HANNAH MORGAN had a pair of hits in both games totaling 4-for-7 on the day with three RBI and two runs scored.
