Â
DEMOREST, Ga. – The Piedmont women's basketball team was unable to overcome its shooting struggles from behind the arc and fell, 71-65, to East Texas Baptist on Sunday afternoon at Cave Arena.
Â
Just like Friday night, the Lady Lions (1-1) rallied with an offensive outburst in the third quarter. However, this time it was not enough, as the Tigers (2-0) answered back by holding the Piedmont offense to 13 points in the final quarter to come away with the victory.
Â
Coming off the bench,
HOPE FRANKLIN reached double figures for the second consecutive game, leading Piedmont with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Junior transfer
LIVIA SKINNER pitched in with 12 points, seven steals and six rebounds while freshman guard
LU WOOLFOLK filled the stat sheet with eight points, eight rebounds and four assists.
Â
Neither team was able to take control throughout much of the first quarter until East Texas Baptist finished the period on a 7-0 run to take an 18-13 lead into the second quarter.
Â
The Lady Lions were able to hang close throughout much of the second, but the Tigers closed with a 10-3 run over the final 4:18 of the half to grab a double-digit lead going to the break. Franklin led Piedmont with 11 points in just nine first half minutes.
Â
Although ETBU led by as many as 11 points midway through the third quarter, the Lady Lions responded with a 19-8 run to tie the score at 52 apiece with 25 seconds left.
Â
However, ETBU's Erin Berry drained a corner three-pointer on the ensuing possession to put the Tigers back on top headed to the fourth.
Â
The Tigers then used a quick 7-0 run to quickly extend their lead back to 10. From there, the closest Piedmont came the rest of the way was a three-point deficit in the final seconds, but ETBU's Mallory Stephens was able to ice the game at the free throw line to hand Piedmont its first loss of the season.
