DANVILLE, Ky. – Led once again by seniors
MARIANN KENNISON and
HANNAH HOBAN, the Piedmont College softball team swept a road doubleheader from Centre on Sunday afternoon in Kentucky.
Trailing 5-3 in the top of the seventh, Hoban delivered the go-ahead grand slam to lift the Lady Lions (18-5) past Centre, 8-5, in game one. Then, in game two, Piedmont scored a pair of runs in the first and third innings before breaking the game open in the sixth on Hoban's second grand slam to win the contest, 9-1, in six innings.
Game 1: Piedmont 8, Centre 5
Piedmont jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in game one, thanks to Kennison's one-out solo shot in the top of the first.
Then, in the third, the senior from Queen Creek, Arizona struck again, this time for two-run shot that brought home
REBEKAH STEGMAYER to give PC a 3-0 lead.
The multi-home run game was the first of Kennison's PC career.
However, the Colonels responded by adding a run on a home run of their own in the bottom of the third to cut Piedmont's lead to 3-1.
In the bottom of the sixth, Centre took advantage of a Piedmont error early in the inning and strung together five hits to score four runs and take a 5-3 lead into the top of the seventh.
KAYLEE WHITE led off the top of the seventh for the Lady Lions and reached on error but was erased on a fielder's choice for the first out of the inning. Then, after a fly out by
TAYLOR WARREN put the Colonels within an out of clinching the victory, Piedmont recorded four consecutive hits to bring home five runs in the inning.
TK SAULS reached on an infield single before Stegmayer added a single of her own to load the bvases for Kennison, who delivered her eighth consecutive hit, an RBI single that scored
MADDY HOLLOWAY and cut PC's deficit to 5-4.
That set the stage for Hoban, who delivered a clutch grand slam and gave PC the lead for good.
KORY BEST earned the win for the Lady Lions, stranding a pair of runners in the bottom of the sixth after relieving starter
MELISSA ECKMAN.
Then,
MADISON WHITESIDE came on to earn her first save of the season, also stranding a pair of runners to close out Piedmont's ffith straight victory.
Game 2: Piedmont 9, Centre 1
In game two, the Lady Lions' fearsome top of the order struck early again, this time on Hoban's RBI double to bring home Kennison for the game's first run. Two batters later,
KATLYN ANDRIN tacked on another, scoring Hoban on an RBI single.
After the Colonels cracked the scoreboard with a single run in the second, PC answered back with two more runs in the third as
ANNA LEE STONE scored Hoban on an RBI double and freshman
TORI ROPER delivered an RBI single to score Stone.
PC took a 5-1 lead with a single run in the fifth before breaking the game open with five more runs in the top of the sixth thanks to Hoban's second grand slam of the day, giving her five RBI in game two alone and giving PC an eight-run lead.
Whiteside pitched five strong innings to earn the win in game two, while Eckman came on to close out the game with a scoreless bottom half of the sixth.
TURNING POINT:
- Trailing 5-3 with two outs and a runner on in the top of the seventh inning of game one, the Lady Lions recorded four consecutive hits, capped by
HANNAH HOBAN's clutch two-out grand slam to give PC the 8-5 lead they held for the dramatic comeback win.
- In game two, Piedmont struck for two runs each in the first and third innings and never looked on its way to the 9-1 victory in six innings and the doubleheader sweep.
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:

HANNAH HOBAN backed up Saturday's two-homer performance with an even better day on Sunday, going 4-for-7 with two grand slams (including the go-ahead homer with two outs in the seventh of game one), nine RBI and four runs scored.

MARIANN KENNISON went 4-for-5 on the day, also hitting a pair of home runs (both in game one) while driving in five runs and scoring five runs.

MADISON WHITESIDE pitched a scoreless bottom of the seventh to earn her first save of the season in game one before delivering five innings of one-run ball in game two, improving her season record to a team-best 8-1.
NEWS AND NOTES:
- Piedmont's six-game win streak is its longest of the season.
- Over the past two days, Kennison has gone 9-for-10 at the plate with two home runs, three doubles, 10 RBI and 10 runs scored.
- Hoban's past two days have included a .467 average, four home runs (two grand slams), 15 RBI, three doubles and seven runs scored.
