Martin Earns Win No. 500 as Softball Sweeps DH at William Peace

DEMOREST, Ga. – The Piedmont College softball team swept a Sunday doubleheader at William Peace as head coach Terry Martin picked up career win No. 500 in the process.
 
The Lady Lions (11-4) rolled to a 12-2 victory in six innings in game one before using a five-run sixth to pull away from the Pacers (5-9) and win game two, 6-3.
 
Game 1: Piedmont 12, William Peace 2 (F/5)
 
Piedmont wasted no time getting on the board in game one, as MARIANN KENNISON's RBI double to left field brought home REBEKAH STEGMAYER for the game's first run.
 
After William Peace tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the first, Piedmont took the lead for good on MADISON GARRETT's solo home run in the top of the second.
 
The Lady Lions added two more runs in the second thanks to an RBI ground out from TK SAULS, which also brought home Stegmayer.
 
Sauls added her second RBI of the day on a single up the middle, capping a two-run third inning for PC that gave it a 6-1 lead.
 
The Pacers added a solo home run in the third, but Piedmont answered back with a six-run fourth inning to break the game open.
 
DREW GRAHAM singled home HANNAH HOBAN before Sauls cleared the bases with an RBI double. Then, in her second plate appearance of the inning, Hoban singled home Stegmayer to give the Lady Lions a 12-2 lead that held the rest of the way, giving Martin win No. 500 in his career.
 
MELISSA ECKMAN earned her third win of the season, striking out a season-high seven Pacers over 4.2 innings.
 
Game 2: Piedmont 6, William Peace 3
 
Game two was a pitcher's duel to start, with both teams scoreless through the first three frames.
 
Piedmont finally broke the scoreless tie in the top of the fourth on Garrett's single to center field, which brought home LInsay Link.
The Lady Lions then broke the game open in the top of the sixth, scoring five runs on three base hits.
 
Kennison led off the inning with a double to left field before being lifted for pinch-runner TORI ROPER, who scored on a bunt by TAYLOR BROWN.
 
Piedmont added two more runs on TAYLOR WARREN's RBI double. Then, Andrin finished off the scoring with an RBI single that brought home Garrett and Warren and gave PC a 6-0 lead.
 
The Pacers rallied in the sixth, scoring a run on three hits and an error, but Piedmont starter MADISON WHITESIDE stranded two base runners to escape the threat.
 
William Peace threatened once again in their last at-bat, scoring twice before KAYLEE WHITEs's perfect throw to third base to nail Kristen Bailly's stolen base attempt to end the contest.

MADISON WHITESIDE pitched 6.2 innings, allowing three runs with four strikeouts to improve to 5-0 on the season.
 
TURNING POINT:
- In game one, the Lady Lions scored six times in the fourth inning to take a 12-2 lead and earn head coach Terry Martin his 500thwin.
- In game two, Piedmont broke the game open with a five-run sixth inning to take a 6-0 lead.
 
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
TK SAULS drove in a season-high five runs in game, including a bases-clearing double in the Lady Lions' six-run fourth inning.
- MADISON GARRETT recorded three hits for the day, including her first career home run, a solo shot in the second of game one that gave PC the lead for good.
 
NEWS AND NOTES:
- Piedmont's win in game one gave head coach Terry Martin his 500thcareer win, all of which have come at Piedmont.
- Since 2010, the Lady Lions have had a winning record in each season under Martin, including three straight seasons of 20 wins or more.
