Â
DEMOREST, Ga. – The Piedmont College softball team concluded play at the Piedmont Classic with a 4-2 win on Saturday afternoon at the Walker Athletic Complex.
Â
The Lady Lions (2-1) earned the win despite being outhit, 10-2, thanks to a four-run fourth inning that included a game-tying two-run double by
KAYLEE WHITE. Two batters later, PC held a 4-2 lead after scoring on a pair of wild pitches.
Â
MADISON WHITESIDE,
KORY BEST and
MELISSA ECKMAN combined to stifle the Panthers (1-1) offense, as they scattered 10 hits and allowed just two runs.
Â
Whiteside earned the win for the second straight game, pitching four innings of two-run ball with a pair of strikeouts. Best came on in relief and pitched around three hits over two innings before Eckman came on with one on and nobody out in the seventh and retired all three batters she faced to earn the save.
Â
The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth inning, when Birmingham-Southern broke the tie with a sacrifice fly and an RBI single.
Â
However, in the bottom of the inning, the Lady Lions used a patient approach and put pressure on the Panthers defense to take the lead.
MARIANN KENNISON was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame before
HANNAH HOBAN walked to put two runners on. White followed with a double down the right field line to tie the score.
Â
Then, newcomer
KATLYN ANDRIN scampered home from third on a wild pitch to score what turned out to be the game winning run.  After stealing third, White also came home on a wild pitch to give the Lady Lions a two-run cushion, which held the rest of the way.
