Bailey’s Career High Leads Lady Lions Past Covenant

DEMOREST, Ga. – The Piedmont College women's basketball team ran away from Covenant in the second half to win, 89-56, on Friday night at Cave Arena.
 
After the games was tied at 18 apiece after the first quarter, the Lady Lions (19-4, 13-1 USA South) outscored the Scots (7-14, 5-8 USA South) 71-38 over the final three quarters to pull away with the 33-point victory.
 
Piedmont had four players reach double figures, led by senior JATASIA BAILEY's career-high 27 points on six three-pointers. AMARI PRICE added 16 points, seven assists and a career-best seven steals, while RACHEL IRBY tallied 13 points to go with eight rebounds and made 9-of-12 from the free throw line.
 
Covenant started the game on fire, jumping out to a quick 12-3 lead. However, the Lady Lions responded and ended the period on a 16-6 run to tie the score heading into the second quarter.
 
After the Scots scored to start the second quarter, a KELLY ACKERMAN three-pointer gave Piedmont a lead it held the rest of the way. Covenant scored only 10 points in the quarter as the Lady Lions increased its lead to 14 points at the break.
 
PC held the Scots to just 25 percent from the floor in the third quarter and scored 26 points to extend its lead to over 20 points.
 
The fourth quarter was more of the same, as the Lady Lions added 21 more points for their season high of 89 for the game.
 
The win keeps Piedmont undefeated at home on the season.
 
Up next, the Lady Lions host Huntingdon tomorrow at 4 p.m. in their final regular season home game. Seniors JALEN DAVIS, ABBEY CRAVEN and Bailey will be honored before the game.
 
TURNING POINT:
- After falling behind, 12-3, in the opening minutes, Piedmont outscored Covenant, 39-16, the rest of the first half to build a double-digit lead that stood the rest of the game.
 
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES;
- In her second-to-last scheduled home game, JATASIA BAILEY shined with a career-highs in points (27) and three-pointers (6). She also added five rebounds and three steals.
- Despite just taking eight field goal attempts, AMARI PRICE scored 16 points, recorded seven assists and added a career-high seven steals.
- RACHEL IRBY knocked down 9-of-12 from the foul line and scored 13 points to go with eight rebounds.
- HOPE FRANKLIN also scored 13 points and added nine rebounds on 6-of-7 shooting.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Piedmont's 89 points were a season-high and marked the second-straight game the team has reached 80.
- The Lady Lions shot a season-best 54.7% from the field.
- PC is now 8-0 at Cave Arena with seven of those wins coming by at least 20 points.
