LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Piedmont College women's soccer team lost 2-1 in the opening round of the NCAA Division III women's soccer tournament to No. 17 Lynchburg College on a chilly Saturday afternoon.
The two schools faced off against each other for the first time in women's soccer as the Hornets (19-2-2) outscored the Lady Lions (17-5-1) 2-1 in the first half.
ANSLYN STAMPS scored in the second minute of the game to give Piedmont an early 1-0 lead.
Stamps scored off a
SAMANTHA ISHEE corner kick as she delivered the ball to the lower left side of the goal.
The junior finished with a team-high three shots.
After starting a bit flat, Lynchburg found its rhythm on offense and tied the game 1-1 in the 31st minute, before scoring the game winner in the 33rd minute.
The Hornets outshot Piedmont 14-2 in the first half and finished the game with a 28-6 shot advantage.
Sophomore keeper
MIRANDA MCNALLEY kept Piedmont alive throughout the entire game as she finished with 11 saves.
The Hornets, who have played in 12 straight NCAA tournaments, will face Emory on Sunday at 3 p.m.

-- Caitlin Mertens led all players with nine shots, six shots on goal and added one goal.
