Demorest ,GA - The Piedmont College softball team finished the 2017 season on Sunday losing a tightly contested game three against Maryville 5-3 in the first round of the USA South softball tournament. The best of three series was claimed by the Scots as they came from behind 3-0 in the bottom of the sixth to plate five runs and advance.

It was a pitcher's duel early on as it was scoreless through the first five innings but in the sixth inning, the bats came to life. For the Lady Lions, HALEY HIXON singled to begin the frame then HANNAH HOBAN doubled to center field to put both runners in scoring position.

It was JOSIE COKER who sent across the first runs of the game with another double making it 2-0 Lady Lions, then JESSICA BAGWELL doubled for the third straight double in the inning to score Coker making it 3-0.

Piedmont looked to be in control, but in the bottom of the frame, the Scots came out firing. A double combined with an error put two on, then a single loaded the bases. A sacrifice fly put the first run across, then an error drove in two runs to tie the contest on what would've been the third out of the inning.

The final two runs came on a double to left center making it 5-3. The Lady Lions were unable to answer in the top of the seventh despite a pair of singles to start the inning.

Turning Point
--The Scots scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth to seal the victory with just one earned run in the frame.

Standout Performances
--JOSIE COKER broke the scoreless tie in the sixth inning with a double to left field as she was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.

Inside the Box Score
--Five of Piedmont's eight hits in the game were doubles as it was five of the first six hits that went for two bags.
--MELISSA ECKMAN took the loss moving to 14-6 on the season ending her USA South Pitcher of the Year campaign.

News & Notes
--The Lady Lions finish the season 26-15 overall and were 16-6 in conference play.
