Lady Lion Softball Takes Pair from Visiting Scotties in USA South Home Opener

Demorest, GA - The Lady Lion softball team opened USA South action at home Wednesday hosting Agnes Scott College taking the twinbill from the Scotties. Piedmont won 7-1 in the first contest and thanks to a two-run double in the bottom of the fifth by MADISON MARTIN, the Lady Lions took an 8-0 decision in five innings in game two. 

The Lady Lions got off to a hot start as they plated three runs in the bottom of the first thanks to three hits, including two extra base hits. ALLYSON GENTRY was hit by a pitch to start the inning, then stole second, followed by HALEY HIXON hitting her first triple of her career down the right field line driving in Gentry. 

Leading 3-0, Piedmont would add to the advantage in the third making it 5-0 on three more hits. SARAH WALKER would give up just one hit until the top of the fourth when the Scotties had three singles to begin the inning, but Walker would get out of the bases loaded jam with a pair of throws home to get the lead runner and a pop out to end the inning. 

Piedmont would add its final two runs in the fourth making it 7-0 after just a single hit and three stolen bases in the inning. SHANNON BAKER entered in relief in the fifth inning and earned the save pitching the final three innings giving up just two hits and one run while striking out two. 

Game two was all Lady Lions as MELISSA ECKMAN held the Scotties to just two hits in the five innings while striking out seven batters. Eckman now has 49 strikeouts this season which is third best in the USA South. 

Five of Piedmont's seven runs in game two were unearned following three errors for the Scotties. The game-ending hit came from freshman MADISON MARTIN who doubled to center field to score the final two runs and end the contest in five innings. 

Turning Point
--The Lady Lions had a three-run first inning in game one on three hits including HALEY HIXON posting a triple, her first extra base hit of her career. 
--The final hit of the game came from MADISON MARTIN in a pinch-hitting appearance as she doubled to center field to drive in the two runs needed to take the contest in five innings. 

Standout Performances
--HALEY HIXON was 4-for-5 in the double header posting a triple, four runs scored and two RBI. 
--MELISSA ECKMAN pitched the complete game in game two of the DH going five innings giving up just two hits and striking out seven batters. 

Inside the Box Score
--Piedmont posted seven extra base hits in the contest with six doubles and a triple. 

News & Notes
--Piedmont had 12 stolen bases in the doubleheader including ALLYSON GENTRY posting three in the first contest.
