Softball Drops Doubleheader to Visiting Brenau in 2017 Season Opener

Need to Know
Game 1 Score: Piedmont 1, Brenau 2
Game 2 Score: Piedmont 1, Brenau 3
Records: Lady Lions 0-2, Tigers 2-0
Location: Demorest, Georgia - Walker Athletic Complex

Demorest, GA  - The Piedmont College softball team found tough sledding earlier Saturday afternoon against pitcher Kathleen Daniel of Brenau University as the Tigers swept a doubleheader from the Lady Lions 2-1 in the opener with Brenau earning a 3-1 win in the encore.

In the first contest of the day, the spotlight belonged to Daniel as she collected a NAIA-record 20 strikeouts against the Lady Lions with the only remaining putout in the contest coming on a grounder back to Daniel herself.

Despite the efforts of the Brenau pitcher, SARAH WALKER put together a strong performance in the circle as her counterpart allowing just four hits over seven innings of work.  However, it would be two unearned runs off a pair of errors that put Piedmont in a 2-0 hole heading into their final chance at the plate.

PC almost pulled off the unthinkable getting a run back in the bottom of the 7th as ANNA LEE STONE was hit by a Daniel pitch bringing home HAYDEN SAVAGE to cut the deficit in half.  However, Daniel would strike out the next batter to preserve the tight win for the Tigers in the opener.

In the encore, the two squads again found themselves in a low-scoring affair as the Tigers broke up a 0-0 deadlock with a RBI double in the 4th before Piedmont answered in the home half with a BECKA ROSS RBI-single.

A Brenau home run however in the 6th inning gave the Tigers the lead back and an insurance run would be added in the 7th to give the visitors an eventual 3-1 win to complete the DH sweep.

Turning Point
--The bottom of the 7th saw Brenau's Daniel get out a bases loaded, 2-out situation to preserve a 2-1 win.
--In Game 2, it was a Shelton Kendrix home run in the 6th that separated the two as she belted a long ball over left field with two outs on the board.

Standout Performances
--SARAH WALKER did not give up an earned run in the first contest with only four hits allowed though PC fell 2-1.
--BECKA ROSS was 1-for-3 in the second game of the day with a RBI single in the 4th inning to tie the contest at one each.
--Credit is due to Kathleen Daniel whose work in the circle for Brenau saw her strike out a combined 24 batters in a first-game start and a relief appearance in the encore.

Inside the Box Score
--Daniel's 20 strikeouts in the first game of the day tied a NAIA record which had stood since April of 2001 as the lone such contest for a pitcher.

News & Notes
--PC dropped both games of a doubleheader for just the first time since April of 2015 when Huntingdon took two from the Lady Lions in conference play.

Up Next
--A trip to Birmingham-Southern a week from today's DH as Piedmont pays a visit to the Panthers on February 11 for a two-game set.
