Demorest, GA - The Piedmont College softball team took two wins on the first day of the Piedmont Classic hosted at Walker Athletic Complex opening up with a 12-4 win over Greensboro College before holding on to knock off Millsaps College 3-0 to wrap up Saturday's action.
In the Lady Lions' first game of the day, Piedmont ran away at the end from the Pride of Greensboro College with a 12-4 victory in six innings. Strong play at the plate by the Lady Lions was the story vs. the Pride with five different Piedmont players tallying multi-hit days including
HANNAH HOBAN who went 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
After Greensboro scored first with a run in the first half inning, Piedmont answered with RBI basehits from
JOSIE COKER and
BECKA ROSS in the home half of the inning before adding two more in the 2nd for a 4-1 lead.
The Pride would get one back in the 4th but Piedmont again put four on the board unanswered highlighted by
MADISON GARRETT's RBI triple in the 5th. A two-run single from Greensboro in the 6th would make it a four-run game, but PC scored four in the home half to end it early sparked by a
JESSICA BAGWELL RBI double to center.
In the second game, Piedmont took the lead first with a
JESSICA BAGWELL single to center as
ALLYSON GENTRY capitalized on a defensive miscue from the Majors to cross the plate for a 1-0 lead in the 1st.
The Lady Lions added two to the lead in what could have been a breakout inning during the 4th as Piedmont picked up the runs on a wacky play which started with
HALEY MCCURRY singling through the right side.
Her hit plated Becka Ross with the throw to home not in time, but as McCurry saw the catcher throw to third, she took off forcing a throw to second sliding in under the tag. As a result of that throw,
AUDREY ESAKOFF headed home and slid in safely as well which allowed McCurry to get back up and take third as PC plated a pair and took a 3-0 lead.
It was more than enough for youngster
MELISSA ECKMAN to earn her second win of the season as she turned in a 7-inning shutout of the Majors with Piedmont winning two on the day.
