Demorest, GA - In a nail biter in Cave Arena, the Lady Lions held on to topple Maryville College 55-49, handing the Scots their first loss in conference play this season. Piedmont finished a perfect 12-0 season at home for the first time in the NCAA Era.
The Lady Lions did not score until the 5:41 mark of the first quarter when
DAKOTA SULLENS banked a pair of free throws, but it was a low scoring affair on both sides as it was just 5-4, Maryville leading with 4:15 to play in the first. Three-pointers by
JALEN DAVIS and
JATASIA BAILEY put PC up after the first quarter 13-11, and the first two baskets from the floor for Piedmont in the second both came from behind the arc.
A three by
BRIANNA BARRETT put PC up 19-13, but Maryville stormed back with a 14-3 run to close out the quarter and led 27-22 at the break. Piedmont was quickly down by eight after the Scots' Haley Talbott hit a 3-pointer to start the second half, but
BRIANNA BARRETT answered with one of her own to neutralize the threat.
A 3-pointer by
ERIN CLIFFORD cut it to a two point game with 5:30 to go in the third, and
JALEN DAVIS tied the game with just under five to play. Those were part of a 9-0 run for Piedmont that put the Lady Lions out in front for good.
Barrett drained another 3-pointer to start the fourth quarter putting Piedmont ahead by seven. The Lady Lions stretched the lead to nine with 4:35 to go, but Maryville pulled to within two points with less than three minutes to play. Piedmont nailed four free throws in the final minutes to seal the contest and the stingy defense kept the Scots from getting a good look.
Piedmont posts an astounding 116-26 home record since the 2005-06 season with this 12-0 season being the only perfect slate thus far. The Lady Lions' win clinched hosting the first round of the tournament at home next weekend with the schedule to be announced by the conference office once the regular season is completed throughout the league.
