Salem, Va. - The Piedmont College women's basketball team started the 2017-18 campaign on the road in Salem, Virginia taking down the Maroons of Roanoke College in a 76-64 victory for PC.
The opening quarter of the Lady Lions 2017-18 season was a battle as both teams went back and forth in the early minutes of the competition. Piedmont edged the Roanoke Maroons by only one point after the first horn went off to end the first 16-15.
The Lady Lions would win the edge again in the second quarter with a seven point run midway through the quarter. Brittany Walker came alive for the Lady Lions in the paint during the second cleaning up the rebounds and putting back some points for PC to close out the opening half Piedmont leading 36-27.
Back-to-back layups from Rachel Irby and
DAKOTA SULLENS would set the tempo for the third quarter in favor of Piedmont. Carlie Shields would claim a block in the stat book before heading to the offensive end and draw a foul to close out the third with two free throws putting PC up by ten 53-43.
In the final quarter, Piedmont's scoring was started by a deep three from
BRIDGETTE KELLY to move the Lady Lions up 56-45. After a seven point run from the Maroons, Kelly would knock down another from three point land to add to her three point stats on the game. Piedmont would continue to hold off Roanoke for the remainder of the game taking the contest 76-64 in their season opener.
Turning Point
--Piedmont outscored Roanoke 20-12 in the second quarter with six different Lady Lions scoring for PC.
Standout Performances
--Carlie Shields led PC in points with 19 in her senior season debut and Jatasia Bailey would follow her lead with 12 points of her own.
--Brittany Walker dominated the paint with 13 rebounds in the contest.
Inside the Box Score
--The Lady Lions shooters improved from 28.7% from three point land to 50% in the second half.
News & Notes
--Piedmont moves to 2-0 overall against the Maroons with the last meeting coming in 2007 when the Lady Lions took the GSAC championship as well as made an appearance in the NCAA tournament.
Up Next
--The Lady Lions are competing in the Jean Beamer Tip Off Classic and stay in Salem for a contest tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. against Washington and Lee University.
