Lady Lion Soccer Loses Close Call to #5 Centre 1-0

Danville, KY - The Lady Lion soccer team wrapped up the opening weekend of tournament play facing tournament host #5 Centre College losing 1-0 to the Colonels. The fifth ranked Colonels scored the lone goal of the contest in the 50th minute securing the shutout victory and moving to 3-0 overall.

Piedmont did not have many offensive opportunities in the game as the Colonels held the Lady Lions to just one shot and no shots on target in the contest. Centre's offense was firing away as the Colonels took a total of 16 shots though only six were on frame. 

ASHLYN ATNIP earned the start in goal for the Lady Lions as she worked the first half and CIERRA BELINKIE took over for the second period. The duo have played the same role in both contests for Piedmont this season as Atnip has yet to give up a goal in the 2016 season. 


The Lady Lions move to 0-2 following the weekend's tournament with Birmingham-Southern on the schedule in two days time. Piedmont will take on the Panthers in Birmingham, Alabama Tuesday night. 

Turning Point
--Centre's Keeghan Francis scored the lone goal in the contest during the 50th minute of play providing the game winner for the Colonels. 

Standout Performances
--ASHLYN ATNIP started the contest for Piedmont and recorded three saves in the first half.
--CIERRA BELINKIE worked in goal for the Lady Lions for the final period picking up a pair of saves giving up one goal. 

Inside the Box Score
--The Colonels outshot Piedmont 16-1 in the contest with six shots on goal for Centre while Piedmont had none.

News & Notes
--This marked the first ever meeting between the two schools in program history. 
--Centre finished the 2015 season 21-2-1 overall making it to the semifinals of the NCAA Division III National Tournament with a Final Four loss to Williams, the eventual DIII National Champions.

The Lady Lions continue on the road as they travel to Birmingham, Alabama to take on Birmingham-Southern College Tuesday, September 6 at 6 p.m.
