Salem Forces Scoreless Tie at Walker Athletic Complex with Lady Lion Soccer

Need to Know
Score:  Piedmont 0 - Salem 0 (F-2OT)
Records:  Lady Lions 2-3-1 (1-1-1 USA South), Spirits 5-1-1 (1-1-1 USA South)
Location: Demorest, Georgia - Walker Athletic Complex

Demorest, GA - In their first contest at home since opening the 2016 season, the Piedmont College women's soccer team was unable to get three points from Salem College who forced a scoreless draw after 110 minutes of play.

Piedmont controlled the majority of possession in the contest, but it was a quick strike counterattack from Salem that helped the Spirits earn the road point in USA South play.

The two foes were scoreless through halftime before Piedmont ramped up the pressure a bit more in the second highlighted by a rocket shot from SAVANNAH CASTLES that hit the crossbar before getting cleared out of the box.

Salem would have a chance to end it late as well with a free header in the box that saw the Spirits put a strong header towards net which was turned away by Piedmont keeper ASHLYN ATNIP.  That save in the 81st minute helped Piedmont keep the net clean with the two headed to overtime to settle the score.

After a quiet first overtime period, Piedmont's second efforts in double overtime had Salem on its heels with back-to-back corners and a long range effort from CASSIDY REICH that just whistled by the far post.

However, neither team could net the gamewinner in the end with the two forced to settle for a scoreless draw in Demorest.

Turning Point
--Salem was able to hold off back-to-back efforts on corner kicks late in the second overtime period as neither team came away with a W.

Standout Performances
--ASHLYN ATNIP turned away seven shots on target for the Salem attack making a key save point blank with just minutes to play in regulation to keep it a scoreless game forcing OT.
--Piedmont compiled 11 shots on the attack including a strike from SAVANNAH CASTLES that blasted off the crossbar, but PC was unable to find the net.

Inside the Box Score
--Atnip's save percentage rose from a .909 on the season to a .952 after the 110 shutout minutes which leads the USA South as does her 0.25 goals against average.

News & Notes
--This was the first meeting between the two programs as conference foes since a wacky 4-3 win for Piedmont in the 2011 GSAC Semifinals on the way to a conference title for PC.
--In that contest, Piedmont went down 2-0 in the first eight minutes and would twice need to rally from two goals down to take the victory on a Taylor Hockley score in the 58th.
