Lady Lion Softball Begins USA South Play with Sweep of Scots

Lookout Mountain, GA- In the USA South opener for the Piedmont College softball team, the Lady Lions went 2-0 with a pair of victories over the Scots 9-1 and 8-5. SARAH WALKER earned the win for Piedmont in both outings tossing a total of 10 innings Saturday.

Game one was a scoreless affair until the Lady Lions went to work in the fourth inning scoring eight runs on nine hits and one error. Of those nine hits, JESSICA BAGWELL, ALLYSON GENTRY and AVERY MIGUES doubled while AUDREY ESAKOFF hit her first career home run in the inning.

With an 8-0 lead, the Scots added their only run in the bottom of the fifth, but Piedmont tacked on another as well in the top of the sixth to put away the Scots in six innings. Walker tossed the complete six innings giving up just one run on three hits and one walk while striking out four batters.

HANNAH HOBAN, JOSIE COKER and LAURA CARTER all had a pair of hits for the Lady Lions as they had 12 as a team. Hoban was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and both Carter and Coker were 2-for-3 with Coker adding three RBI.

In game two, the Lady Lions quickly went back to work offensively with a run in the first inning on just a single hit after a pair of walks were issued to two of the first three batters in the game. Piedmont advanced its lead to 4-0 in the top of the second but the Scots put up a 3-spot of their own to make it 4-3.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, starter AUDREY ESAKOFF was moved from the mound to second base and Walker entered in relief, but the Scots added a run tying the game at four. The Lady Lions would add on a pair of runs in the top of the fifth and sixth innings while allowing just one more run moving to an 8-5 victory. 

HANNAH HOBAN was impressive again with a 2-for-2 game accounting for three RBI while also being issued two walks. Carter also was 2-for-2 in the contest while Walker pitched four innings in relief giving up just one run and two hits while striking out five batters for her second win of the day. 

Turning Point
--A scoreless game was broken wide open with an eight-run fourth inning by Piedmont in game one.
--An ANNA LEE STONE two-run double in the fifth inning put Piedmont ahead for good in game two.

Standout Performances
--HANNAH HOBAN hit her third home run of her career, as she leads the team in home runs this season as well as batting average at .478.
--SARAH WALKER earned the victory in both games moving her record to 3-1.

Inside the Box Score
--AUDREY ESAKOFF hit her first home run of her career, a two-run homer, in game one.

News & Notes
--The Lady Lions begin conference play 2-0 in the USA South.
