Demorest, GA - In a game that came down to the wire, it was
BRIDGETTE KELLY's 3-pointer with just 30 seconds remaining in the contest that lifted the Lady Lions to a 70-67 victory over Emory University.
DAKOTA SULLENS tacked on a pair of free throws to seal the win as the Lady Lions remained a perfect 6-0 at home this season.
The Piedmont College women's basketball team took on the Eagles of Emory day two of the Cancer Awareness Tournament in Cave Arena against the Eagles of Emory University Friday night when PC won the contest 70-67.
The Lady Lions and the Eagles matched each other almost shot for shot in the first, however the long ball was the difference maker in the opening quarter as
BRIDGETTE KELLY hit two and
ERIN CLIFFORD knocked one in late to put PC ahead 20-18 at the end of the first quarter.
Early in the second quarter, Emory's Ashley Oldshue would tie the game at 20, accounting for only a portion of her 19 total points in the game. The lead would change six times until
CARLY SALES and
JATASIA BAILEY went back-to-back from three point land giving Piedmont a five point lead going into halftime.
PC struggled defensively in the third quarter with the two teams marking 18 points a piece in the period. Emory's Fran Sweeney was responsible for half of those banking three from distance. The Lady Lions would maintain the lead heading into the fourth 53-48.
The final quarter was highlighted by
CARLY SALES scoring a layup falling down, drawing the foul and making the extra free throw to give Piedmont a lead late in the game. The Eagles would battle back and take the lead 67-65 until
BRIDGETTE KELLY crushed a wide open three pointer with 30 seconds showing on the board giving the Lady Lions the 68-67 lead.
DAKOTA SULLENS would get fouled and ice the game with five seconds left making a pair of free throws as Piedmont went on to win 70-67.
Turning Point
--After three hard fought quarters, BRIDGETTE KELLY knocked down a shot from beyond the arc to put the Lady Lions ahead with 30 seconds left in the game.
Standout Performances
--Three PC players posted double digits in the points column in
CARLY SALES (15),
CARLIE SHIELDS (13), and
BRIDGETTE KELLY (12).
--Kelly went 66.7% from three point land including the shot from distance to give Piedmont the final lead.
Inside the Box Score
--The teams were even in personal fouls but the Lady Lions kept their poise and finished 61.1% from the charity stripe.
News & Notes
--The win tonight gives Piedmont their ninth victory over Emory as they post a 9-13 record since their first meeting on December 6, 2003.
