Piedmont Posts NCAA Era Program-Best 100-Point Victory Over Mary Baldwin 129-29

Staunton, VA - The Piedmont College women's basketball team put on a showcase Sunday afternoon with a record-setting performance in a 129-29 victory over Mary Baldwin College. The 100-point differential is the largest in the NCAA era for the Lady Lions, topping a 94-point win against Wesleyan College in the 2007-08 season.

The Lady Lions set a new NCAA Era program record for points scored with 129, most field goal's made with 51 and most 3-point field goals made with 17. The previous record for each category was 115 for points scored, 47 for field goal's made and 14 for 3-pointers made.

Piedmont ran away with it from the start with a 37-3 first quarter including a a 29-0 run after the opening basket made by the Fighting Squirrels. The Lady Lions continued their dominance in the second quarter as they outscored Mary Baldwin 29-10 to take a 66-13 lead into the half.

The third quarter began with a 12-0 run for Piedmont before the Fighting Squirrels were able to have their largest point total in a period with 11 points though the Lady Lions had 33 of their own. Taking a 75-point lead into the fourth quarter, Piedmont led it 99-24 looking to break the century mark for just the fourth time since the 2007-08 season.

With the first basket of the fourth period, the Lady Lions eclipsed 100 with a jumper by MARY KATE RUSHTON making it 101-24. Piedmont held the Fighting Squirrels to just five points in the final period while scoring 30 including a 20-0 run through the first 6:30 of the quarter.

Piedmont led by as many as 101 in the final minute of play but a 3-pointer by Mary Baldwin with 37 seconds left on the clock brought it back to 98, however, MARY BESS SKINNER hit a jumper in the paint with nine seconds to go to make it an even 100-point victory for the Lady Lions.

MARY KATE RUSHTON led the team in scoring with 15 points but seven Lady Lions scored in double figures as SYMONE BALL (12 points), JATASIA BAILEY (11 points), CARLIE SHIELDS (11 points), JALEN DAVIS (10 points), CARLY SALES (10 points) and DAKOTA SULLENS (10 points) all contributed 10 or more.

Turning Point
--A 37-3 opening quarter set the tone for the game and the Lady Lions continued to impress throughout the contest. 

Standout Performances
--CARLY SALES came up just one rebound shy of a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds while SYMONE BALL posted 12 points and eight rebounds.
--The Lady Lion defense held Mary Baldwin to shooting just 21% in the game and forced 36 turnovers, the most Piedmont has forced since the 2013-14 season when Toccoa Falls College had 43. 

Inside the Box Score
--Piedmont's 129 points are the most the team has scored in the NCAA Era topping the total of 115 against Fisk University in the 2003-04 season. 
--Sixteen players for the Lady Lions saw seven or more minutes of playing time with no athlete seeing more than 17 minutes in the game. 

News & Notes
--Piedmont has scored more than 100 just four times now since the 2007-08 season when they accomplished the feat twice against Wesleyan College in the same season.
--The Lady Lions are one win away from a 12-game win streak which would be the first time since a 12-game win streak to begin the year in the 2011-12 season.

Piedmont will return to action at home for a USA South doubleheader on Wednesday against Maryville. The women's game begins at 5:30 p.m. while the men are set to follow at 7:30 p.m.
